The Boston Red Sox are still hoping to re-sign Alex Bregman.

The Chicago Cubs are heating up in MLB’s hot stove season. After making a few small signings, and presumably being out on their own free agent in Kyle Tucker, the Cubs made a huge splash in the MLB free agent market on Saturday night.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Chicago Cubs are in agreement with star third baseman Alex Bregman on a free-agent contract. This move comes just days after Chicago landed starter Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins in exchange for prospect Owen Caissie. The Alex Bregman contract is five years, $175 million, and a $35 million AAV for the three-time All-Star. The deal has no opt-outs and includes a full no-trade clause. Bregman will be in the windy city for the foreseeable future.

Cubs Sign Alex Bregman in Huge Offseason Move

This is a huge splash for the Chicago Cubs, who get their much-needed infielder and one of the biggest free agents on the market. Unfortunately, this means Chicago is likely out on Kyle Tucker, but to land Bregman is huge news for Chicago, and bad news for all the teams linked to him, like the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tigers.

This signing comes a year after the Cubs’ failed attempt to land Alex Bregman last offseason.

Bregman spent his 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox after signing a $120 million contract last offseason, but the Scott Boras client had an opt-out after the first year, chose to use it, and cashed in after being an all-star and very solid hitter for Boston’s lineup this past season.

In 2025, Bregman played in 114 games and hit .273 with 18 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 128. Bregman injured his hamstring in the middle part of the season, and that left him out for a couple of months.

Alex Bregman is a career .272 hitter with 10 years of MLB experience. He has spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Houston Astros. The 2X World Series champion has 209 career home runs and 293 doubles.

This move is really tough news for the Red Sox, who obviously lose a lot of production in the infield, and have yet to sign a free agent this offseason.

Cubs Solidify Themselves As True NL Contenders

If they hadn’t already been, this move by Jed Hoyer solidifies Chicago as a legit, and possible top contender in the National League to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alex Bregman will slot in a Cubs lineup that already has a boatload of talent in Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and more.

Just a massive move across MLB, and it will be really interesting to see if this signing opens to floodgates for both Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette’s free agent market.

With such a deep starting rotation, a strong bullpen, and now another all-star bat in the lineup, Chicago might be considered the favorite to win the NL Central.
