Chicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer could look to make a blockbuster trade acquisition by adding Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros

Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs started off the MLB offseason slowly, but have picked up speed in a big way over the last couple of weeks.

As fans began to get extremely frustrated with the team not being aggressive to win now, Hoyer pulled off two splash moves.

First, the Cubs went out and acquired starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a big trade with the Miami Marlins. That deal saw top outfield prospect Owen Caissie get shipped back to the Marlin. Chicago then followed that move up by signing star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract.

No one is frustrated with the Cubs anymore. In fact, there are some who are buzzing that the offseason may not be over quite yet.

With that being said, Hoyer has spoken out and delivered a major hint that Chicago is still looking at making more moves. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers shared those comments from the Cubs’ president of baseball operations.

“By no means are we done with the offseason but we did check some of the big boxes,” Hoyer said.

Rogers did note that Hoyer mentioned focusing on adding more depth.

Chicago Cubs Are a Big MLB Offseason Winner

Despite the uneventful start to the offseason, Chicago is emerging as one of the biggest winners across the league.

Being able to acquire starter like Cabrera was a big addition. He is coming off of a 2025 season with Miami that saw him make 26 starts and compiled an 8-7 record to go along with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 137.2 innings pitched.

There are some health concerns that surround Cabrera, but he is just 27 years old with team control and filthy stuff on the mound.

Bregman was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Cubs’ lineup. With Kyle Tucker on his way out of town after just one season in Chicago, adding the star third baseman was crucial.

Last season with the Boston Red Sox, Bregman hit 18 home runs, drove in 62 RBI, and slashed .273/.360/.462 across 114 games played.

Those numbers will help replace Tucker’s production. He also filled the biggest need that the Cubs had in their lineup, with young third baseman Matt Shaw struggling at the plate last season.

Jed Hoyer Has Started Redeeming Himself With Cubs Fans

Over the last few years, fans have grown increasingly frustrated with Hoyer. Chicago has been choosing to operate like a small-market team, which is far from what is capable of being.

Due to those decisions, the Cubs have struggled to remain competitive.

Finally, the team has shown an interest in pursuing a World Series run. Cabrera and Bregman are going to be major driving forces for Chicago this coming season.

Hoyer has put himself back in the good graces of Cubs fans. For the first time in years, the team is looking like a potential World Series contender ahead of the 2026 season. If more moves are made, Chicago fans will be ecstatic.

Expect to hear more rumors surrounding the Cubs in the near future. Hoyer is clearly open for business and it’ll be interested to see what else Chicago has up its sleeve.
