On Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers will conclude their series with the Boston Red Sox (at home) in Michigan.

The Tigers have lost each of the first two games in the series, so they will look to avoid getting swept on Wednesday.

While the team has remained competitive, they have dealt with an enormous amount of injuries to start the season.

On Tuesday, the Tigers announced the latest update on Justin Verlander.

He has been out of action since his only start of the year (on March 30).

Jason Beck of MLB.com wrote (on May 5): “Justin Verlander will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, hopefully will face hitters in sim game this weekend. He’ll likely need another step beyond that, either a rehab start or a sim game, before he’s cleared to return from injured list and rejoin Tigers rotation.”

During his only start of year, Verlander went 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, two walks and five earned runs.

Via MLB.com (updated as of May 5): ” Threw latest bullpen May 3 at close to full intensity, topping out at 94 mph on fastball. Will throw bullpen session on May 6. Could face hitters over the weekend, but would likely need a rehab start or simulated game after that.”

According to the site, he is still supposed to return later this month.

Despite losing each of their last two games to Boston, the Tigers are still 18-19 in 37 games, which has them as the top team in the American League Central.

They are also an outstanding 12-5 in the 17 games they have played at home.

After Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox, the Tigers will open up a new series with the Kansas City Royals on Friday night in Missouri.

Last season, they lost to the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS.

The franchise last reached the World Series in 2012.
