There was some growing speculation after comments by Detroit Tigers‘ ace Tarik Skubal that the 2X CY Young away winner might stay with Team USA after reports that he would only pitch one game, against Great Britain, which has already happened.

However, ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced Monday afternoon that Tarik Skubal will leave Team USA following tonight’s game and return to camp with the Detroit Tigers, manager Mark DeRosa said. The Tigers camp is in Lakeland, Florida, and Tarik Skubal is gearing up for a contract year.

Tarik Skubal will depart from Team USA after their contest against Mexico on Monday night and rejoin the Detroit Tigers ahead of Opening Day, which is less than three weeks away.

Skubal made his slated start against Great Britain on Saturday, and after giving up a leadoff home run to Nate Eaton, Skubal settled in nicely, giving up just two hits in three innings of work, and striking out five.

This news, even if you’re a Team USA fan, is great for Detroit Tigers fans, who don’t have to worry about Skubal being overworked in the World Baseball Classic.

Tarik Skubal is the best pitcher in MLB, and when he agreed to join Team USA, everyone thought the Americans could be a shoo-in for the finals, but now Mark DeRosa will have to work with Paul Skenes, Logan Webb, and Clay Holmes as top starting pitcher options.
