The Milwaukee Brewers didn’t get their sweep of the Atlanta Braves, but two out of three ain’t bad. Before their series against the New York Mets began, they announced news about Eryks Rivero, Russell Smith, Nicolas Barrios, Romano Donato, Carlos Canales, and Christopher Peralta.
While the Brewers lost the pitching matchup between Tyler Mahle and Shane Drohan, they still made it interesting, with a 4-2 final score.
The Brewers begin their new series against the Mets on Tuesday.
Milwaukee Brewers Release 6 More Players
On August 23rd, Heavy reported on the Brewers releasing Josh Timmerman. Now, that released list has expanded by six names.
Via the MiLB Transactions page, the Brewers have released six more players:
- DSL Brewers Blue released OF Eryks Rivero.
- ACL Brewers released LHP Russell Smith.
- DSL Brewers Blue released OF Nicolas Barrios.
- DSL Brewers Blue released SS Romano Donato.
- DSL Brewers Blue released RHP Carlos Canales.
- DSL Brewers Gold released RHP Christopher Peralta.
Looking at the 6 Players the Milwaukee Brewers Released
Rivero is a 19-year-old outfielder. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound player was in his second year within the Brewers system. In 29 games, he recorded 18 hits, six doubles, 14 RBIs, and one stolen base while hitting a .214 batting average.
Rivero signed a minor league contract with the Brewers back in 2025.
Canales is a 20-year-old pitcher. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hurler played 13 games for both the DSL Brewers Blue and DSL Brewers Gold.
Peralta is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound 19-year-old pitcher. He signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers in January 2024. This year, he recorded nine strikeouts and 11 walks in eight games. He also posted a 10.80 ERA and one blown save in 6.2 innings.
The 5-foot-9, 161-pound Barrios is an 18-year-old outfielder. In 17 games, he recorded seven hits, four RBIs, and five stolen bases, with a .171 batting average.
Donato is a right-handed 18-year-old shortstop. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound player played 23 games, recording eight hits, eight RBIs, one home run, and one stolen base. He also struck out 16 times, batted .127, and was caught stealing a base twice.
Finally, Smith has not played since 2024. The 27-year-old pitcher has landed on the full-season injured list in back-to-back years.
He was first put on the full-season IL in June 2025, and then again on July 28th, 2026.
Smith first signed with the Brewers back on July 23rd, 2021.
Why Would They Release 6 Players?
The biggest question behind a surge of releases like these is, “why?”
Fortunately, the answer is simple. There are two reasons the organization released these six players.
First, all of these teams have finished their seasons. The DSL Brewers Blue finished the season with a 31-24 record and missed the postseason. Conversely, the DSL Brewers Gold finished with a 34-20 record but were knocked out early in the playoffs.
Similarly, the ACL Brewers finished with a 26-34 record, missing the postseason.
Second of all, each player had something about their performance that presented a red flag. Whether that was a lack of control in the pitchers or not being able to hit the ball for the batters.
And then Smith is just straight up unlucky, suffering a second consecutive season-ending injury.
While it’s unfortunate that the Brewers lost so many prospects at once, they have plenty more where that come from.
