The 2025 season was simply a disappointing one for the New York Mets. After a big offseason that saw them land superstar slugger Juan Soto, the Mets responded by finishing the 2025 campaign with an 83-79 record. With this, the Mets finished second in the National League East and missed the playoffs.
When noting that the Mets had huge expectations for the 2025 season, them missing the playoffs was undoubtedly a big deal. As a result of this, the Mets are now looking to strengthen their roster this offseason in hopes of having a bounce-back year in 2026.
The Mets have been active so far this offseason, as they have brought in players like Jorge Polanco, Devon Williams, and Marcus Semien. Yet, with the Mets looking to be contenders, it would not be surprising in the slightest if they look to make at least one major splash before the season gets here.
As a result of this, one star free agent who the Mets have been connected to this offseason is Bo Bichette. There is no question that he would give the Mets’ roster a significant boost if signed, so it would make sense for them to make a big push.
Now, a new update on the possibility of the Mets landing Bichette has come out.
Mets Named Team to Watch in the Bo Bichette Sweepstakes
In a recent article for ESPN, David Schoenfield predicted where each top MLB free agent could end up signing this offseason. One of the teams that Schoenfield mentioned for Bichette was the New York Mets, as he feels that they could be a dark-horse team to watch in the sweepstakes for the superstar infielder.
“Bichette’s age — he’s entering his age-28 season — makes him the kind of free agent who might be more attractive to Stearns, although the Mets have their double-play combo set with Francisco Lindor and Semien. But what about Bichette moving to third? His range at shortstop is subpar anyway, and that was before the knee injury in September. Executives love his high-contact rate that should translate well to October baseball — and he would make for a terrific No. 3 hitter behind Lindor and Soto. Baty would then become trade bait for pitching or outfield help. Don’t sleep on this one,” Schoenfield wrote.
This is undoubtedly a very interesting idea from Schoenfield. Yet, at the same time, it would also make sense for the Mets to try to swing for the fences and land a star like Bichette. He would undoubtedly give their infield a massive boost, even if it forced them to move on from a promising young infielder like Brett Baty.
Mets Have a Ton of Competition for Bichette
If the Mets go all in on Bichette, there is no question that they will have a ton of competition for his services. Among the teams that have been heavily linked to Bichette this offseason are the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants.
With Bichette being a star talent, it makes sense that he is drawing a ton of interest. It will be interesting to see if the Mets can end up winning the sweepstakes from here.
