New York Mets rookie Jefry Yan captured the nation’s attention with his post-strikeout celebration against the Cleveland Guardians. Facing pinch-hitter Angel Martinez, Yan throws an 88.7 mph slider that rings Martinez up. To celebrate, Yan leaps into the air, landing with what many regard as the superhero pose, how movie heroes land on the ground after a leap. Baseball social media went absolutely wild with responses. In the stadium, the Guardians dugout mocked the rookie for his effort. Yet, the Mets, thanks in part to Yan, escaped with a 6-5, extra-inning victory.

Since MLB initially tweeted the celebration, 18,000 people viewed the video. Moreover, the response flew far and fast.
“The first career strikeout and the energy were off the charts! Love seeing players bring this kind of passion to the game,” mentioned one account. The Mets, despite the win, sit firmly in last place. After trading away eight players since the season started, the team looks like it will make the remainder of the season a developmental period for the franchise. Long Winding Road
Yan’s journey to MLB began in 2014 at 17, playing in the Dominican Summer League for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The wiry southpaw posted a 6-2 record there with four saves and a 4.72 average. After Tommy John surgery effectively ended his Angels tenure, Yan, according to Baseball Reference, did not surface again until he rose up to Double-A in the Miami Marlins farm system.
Following a 15 ERA at Triple-A Jacksonville, Yan packed his bags and headed for Japan, playing in Seibu while starting the season competing in winter ball in his native Dominican Republic. The series of trades paved the way for his arrival at the Mets.
Mockery Before Holding the L
When Yan recorded the punchout, you could see Guardians players and their fans jeering and mocking Yan’s accomplishment. However, Yan struck out another batter. He spoke about the fans and the moment after the game.
“If they want to yell at me, if they want to boo me, they can do whatever they want. I’m in my zone. And yeah, I’m going to enjoy my game any way that I want to.”
Similarly, Mets interim manager Andy Green showed support for the rookie.
“It’s real stuff. It’s really impressive. To get out of a bases-loaded jam and get your first punchout, I’m just excited for him. He deserves that.”

In all honesty, Yan could step onto the mound and get shelled repeatedly, ending back in the minors. He would not be the first ballplayer to enjoy the metaphorical cup of coffee in the majors before exiting. Less than 23,000 baseball players have walked onto an MLB field. That remains a tiny fraternity of players. Many minor leaguers will retire without making the leap. For Yan, he now possesses a moment that can stay with him forever, something that made his long, winding road worthwhile, and he can try to carve a spot on a Mets team that needs lefties.
