The New York Mets were handed a key update on infielder Mark Vientos during their series against the Chicago White Sox.
Vientos has been out of the lineup since being placed on the injured list on July 10. Although it’s been close to two months since he was out with a fractured hand, Vientos is close to returning and will play first and third base.
“Began a Minor League rehab assignment on Aug. 21, almost exactly six weeks after being struck on the right hand by a Michael Wacha sinker. Did not require surgery for the injury. Will receive reps at first and third base while on rehab,” the MLB.com injury update article read.
Vientos is expected to join the Mets at some point next week after he gets a couple of games on a minor-league assignment.
The slugger is hitting .211 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season with the Mets.
Mark Vientos Frustrated With Injury

GettyMark Vientos was frustrated with his injury.
After Vientos was hit on the hand by a pitch, he knew he was seriously injured.
After X-rays, it was revealed that Vientos fractured his right hand; he was placed on the 10-day IL, which was frustrating for him.
“It definitely sucks because I want to be with the team and play with the guys,” Vientos said. “I’ve been hit in the hand before. I started to realize this [injury] was different when I was on first base and the hand started to feel a little numb. It was a painful feeling. … The hand was swollen and there was no way I could grip the ball.”
Vientos is in the midst of a disappointing season, and the injury was frustrating for interim manager Andy Greene.
“I’m just disappointed for him today, honestly,” Green said.
Vientos was selected in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Mets.
New York Mets Right Now
The Mets are in the midst of a massively disappointing season as New York will miss the playoffs.
The Mets are coming off a 10-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday to even up the series. New York was led by Luis Robert Jr., who hit two home runs in the win against his old team.
“It feels good to hit homers against any team,” Robert said. “But I will say, it did feel good to hit the home runs here, just because it was a stadium that I played so many games in — essentially my whole career.”
The Mets are 59-71 and have the third-worst record in the MLB.
New York will conclude its three-game road series against the White Sox on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2:10 p.m. ET.
