Cody Bellinger of the New York Yankees is expected to sign elsewhere in the offseason.

The New York Mets have been mentioned in a lot of rumors lately and are fresh off of signing former Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette.

Bichette was signed to a massive three-year, $126 million contract. After missing out on Kyle Tucker, he was the clear priority for the Mets. They were able to steal him away from the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies, who had become the clear favorite to sign Bichette before New York made its move.

Following the move to sign Bichette, fans have been left wondering what could be next.

Immediately following the Bichette move, the Mets were linked to Cody Bellinger. Adding another high-impact bat would make New York a much more serious contender.

With that being said, an update has been given about where the Mets stand when it comes to their interest in Bellinger.

Will Sammon of The Athletic has made it clear that New York is still interested in Bellinger. He also provided how the Mets would like to acquire Bellinger.

“It is likely that after agreeing to a three-year deal worth $126 million with Bo Bichette on Friday, per league sources, their preference with Bellinger would be to acquire him in another short-term arrangement,” Sammon wrote on X. “Bellinger’s appetite for such a deal is unknown. The New York Yankees’ offers feature more years. For the Mets, Bellinger represents just one of several possibilities, albeit one on the higher end of price and potential impact.”

New York Mets Should Go All-Out to Sign Cody Bellinger

Bellinger is coming off of a highly impactful 2025 season with the New York Yankees.

In his first season with the team, Bellinger showed out. He played in 152 games, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 98 RBI, while also slashing .272/.334/.480.

Since the MLB offseason began, the Yankees have been trying to re-sign Bellinger. To this point, they have been unsuccessful in those attempts. Perhaps the Mets could swoop in and steal him away with an aggressive late-offseason push.

New York could also look into starting pitching. The Mets have been talked about as a potential suitor for Milwaukee Brewers star Freddy Peralta as well.

Where Do the Yankees Stand With Bellinger?

At this point in time, it’s clear that the two New York teams are atop the race to sign Bellinger. The Yankees have a high level of urgency to bring him back.

That being said, Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger has reported that the Yankees do not plan on getting involved in a bidding war for Bellinger’s services.

Right now, Klapisch is reporting that New York is offering Bellinger a five-year, $160 million contract with top opt-outs included. Whether or not the Mets can beat that offer remains to be seen.

Expect to hear more about the Bellinger free agency sweepstakes in the near future. It seems that more news comes out about his status on a daily basis.

Fans should be excited that the Mets are still involved and have a high level of interest. Bellinger would be a big-time get for New York if the front office can swing a deal with him.
