On Sunday, the New York Yankees lost to the Milwaukee Brewers (in Wisconsin) by a score of 4-3.

Also during the day, their Double-A team (Somerset Patriots) played the Reading Fightin Phils.

The Yankees announced that Gerrit Cole would be starting for the Patriots.

Cole went 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and one walk (with eight strikeouts).

Here’s what people were saying about Cole on social media:

Somerset Patriots: “Gerrit Cole notched a season-high 8⃣ strikeouts in his fifth rehab start! 👀”

@FiresideYankees: “97.6 MPH from Gerrit Cole 🔥”

@cai_rogers7: “Gerrit Cole making another rehab start, this time in AA, and he starts his afternoon with a strikeout. 97 mph heater freezes Phillies prospect, Dante Nori Hopefully a couple more rehab starts and Cole will be making his way back to the Bronx”

Reading Fightin Phils: “🚨LITTLE LEAGUE HOME RUN ALERT🚨 @phillies no. 7 prospect Dante Nori runs the bases on Gerrit Cole! #GoFightins”

@Tonybps12: “Watching Gerrit Cole get lit up!”

@deadboy90: “Gerrit Cole getting knocked around by a bunch of minor leaguers 😬”

Cole has yet to make his season debut for the Yankees after missing the entire 2025 season.

He most recently pitched in 2024 when he went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 17 games.

Greg Joyce of The New York Post wrote (on May 9): “Gerrit Cole is scheduled to make his next rehab start tomorrow with Double-A Somerset. The Yankees expect him to at least need one or two more after that before he is ready to return.”

Yankees Right Now

The Yankees already have an excellent starting rotation, so adding Cole back into the mix would be an incredible addition later in the season.

Right now, they are 26-15 in 41 games, which has them as the second-place team in the American League East.

On Monday evening, the Yankees will open up a series with the Baltimore Orioles (at Camden Yards).
