The New York Yankees have a couple of decisions to make in the coming days. Amid New York’s eight-game winning streak, Giancarlo Stanton had to be removed from Friday’s game against the Houston Astros and was not in the lineup on Saturday, dealing with calf tightness.

Ahead of the Yankees-Astros series finale on Sunday, Aaron Boone sent a pertinent Anthony Volpe message, as his return is on the horizon after going through a rehab stint. The Yankees manager also announced that a Giancarlo Stanton injured list decision will be made soon.

MLB.com’s Steve Schaeffer wrote (on April 25): “Stanton, who was on first base after hitting an RBI single in Friday’s sixth inning, said he began to feel the tightness while jogging to second after Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked. J.C. Escarra then hit a line drive that Houston’s Dustin Harris was unable to corral against the left-field wall. Stanton was halfway between second and third waiting to see if a catch could be made before trotting to third. He was replaced by pinch-runner Randal Grichuk.”

Stanton addressed the media before Saturday’s game by saying: “I feel better than yesterday, I’m going to try to give it 24 hours, and maybe [Sunday] see where we’re at and decide what to do.”

Per Gary Phillips, who talked with Aaron Boone, the Yankees expect to decide on Giancarlo Stanton before Monday’s series opening with the Rangers, and also noted that Anthony Volpe won’t necessarily be the corresponding move if Stanton does require an IL stint:

“Should Giancarlo Stanton go on the IL, Aaron Boone said Anthony Volpe is “not necessarily” in play for the corresponding move. Boone anticipates Volpe playing in more rehab games this week; he wasn’t sure where that will be yet.”

More on Giancarlo Stanton Situation + Anthony Volpe’s Return

Per reports that have surfaced on Sunday morning, Anthony Volpe is set to return to the Yankees fold on either Wednesday or Thursday.

The semi-good news about Stanton is that he hasn’t undergone any further testing, which could mean it’s a minimal IL stint, if needed, plus the update from Stanton himself and Aaron Boone is pretty optimistic.

However, with Stanton’s injury history, you never know.

As for Volpe, the update from Boone highlights that the Yankees are more likely to call up a bench/role player in the wake of Stanton’s absence. If Stanton requires an IL stint, the player who is the corresponding move will just end up being optioned when New York deems that Anthony Volpe is ready to rejoin the team.

With all the uncertainty surrounding Stanton/Volpe, the Yankees are on a tear right now and are the hottest team in MLB.
