The New York Yankees are certainly a team to keep an eye on as the offseason carries on. At this point in the winter, the Yankees have been pretty quiet, but that is expected to change.

After how this past postseason went for the Yankees, it is understandable that they are aiming to make some moves. The Yankees had a tough end to their postseason, as they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series 3-1. Now, the Yankees will be aiming to bounce back in 2026 and should be aggressive as the offseason rolls on because of it.

The Yankees have been linked to several notable remaining free agents. Two big names who they have been connected to are infielder Bo Bichette and outfielder Kyle Tucker. The Yankees have also been working hard to try to bring back star slugger Cody Bellinger, so it is clear that the American League East club is looking to make some big moves before the 2026 season is here.

Now, the Yankees are being connected to an intriguing free agent pitcher who would have the potential to be a solid addition to their roster.

Yankees Named Potential Fit for Free Agent Pitcher Nick Martinez

ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently looked at multiple remaining free agents and named some potential fits for them. Nick Martinez was among the players that Schoenfield discussed, and he named the Yankees as a possible landing spot for the 35-year-old pitcher.

“The Yankees were in on Edward Cabrera before the Miami Marlins traded him to the Chicago Cubs, so that suggests they’re looking for another starter with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon both unavailable to start the season,” Schoenfield wrote.

With the Yankees needing another pitcher, it would make sense for them to pursue Martinez. The eight-year veteran could be a nice addition to the bottom half of the Yankees’ rotation and would give them a bit more experience in the process.

Another nice factor about Martinez is that he is capable of working in both the rotation and the bullpen. Due to this, he would also provide the Yankees with a versatile pitcher, which would certainly not be a bad thing for the American League East club.

Martinez appeared in 40 games (26 starts) this past season with the Cincinnati Reds, where he posted an 11-14 record and a 4.45 ERA. This is after he had a 10-7 record and a 3.10 ERA in 42 games for the Reds in 2024, so he has the potential to make an impact when performing at his best.

Martinez Should Generate a Good Amount of Interest

With Martinez being among the top free agent pitchers still on the market, there is certainly a chance that he will generate a good amount of interest as more of the big-name starters find their new homes. Due to this, Schoenfield named teams like the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Athletics as possible fits for Martinez as well.

It will be interesting to see if the Yankees end up being the team that signs Martinez. He would have the potential to be a strong addition to their roster if brought in.
