When Will Anthony Volpe Join the New York Yankees?

New York Yankees face an inevitable roster decision as Anthony Volpe returns, with Randal Grichuk emerging as the likely odd man out due to limited role, lack of versatility, and underwhelming production.

After tearing his labrum at some point during the 2025 season, Anthony Volpe had to undergo offseason surgery on his shoulder.

As the Yankees keep winning in Major League Baseball, Anthony Volpe is set to return to the club soon, but no official announcement has been made by the team or Aaron Boone yet.

Yankees’ reporter Bryan Hoch wrote (before the Yankees-Rangers game) on Wednesday:

“Anthony Volpe is playing today for Double-A Somerset. Aaron Boone did not commit when asked if Volpe will rejoin the Yankees on Friday in New York. “We’ll see. It’s Wednesday. We’ve got this game and he’s playing in Somerset today. We’ll see.”

Due to the rehab stint, Anthony Volpe has yet to make his 2026 season debut, which many Yankees fans are anticipating to see if Volpe can perform at a higher level this season.

Reports earlier this week indicated that a decision would be made with Anthony Volpe either Wednesday or Thursday in between the series of playing the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

It’s now Wednesday, and no official decision has been made. It’s plausible to think that Volpe needs a few more days getting regular at-bats in the minors. As Hoch indicates, Volpe and teammate Gerrit Cole will play for the Somerset Patriots on Wednesday.

Anthony Volpe Has Become a Very Controversial Yankees’ Infielder

Once a top prospect for the Yankees, Anthony Volpe’s time in MLB has come with some mixed results.

While he’s shown a good display of power at times, Volpe strikes out a ton (150+ times in each of his three MLB seasons), and hasn’t been the best defender.

However, when the news came out last October that Volpe was playing through a torn labrum, some pointed to that injury as a reason for his struggles. As the Yankees’ everyday shortstop in 2025, Volpe hit .212 with 19 HR, 72 RBI, and an OPS below league-average.

Some Yankees fans believe that Volpe’s return could do more harm than good, as the Yankees are playing so well right now, and some analysts and insiders believe Volpe could be a top trade candidate for the Yankees.

He’s become a very controversial Yankees player, and if he rejoins the team soon, he will have to prove his worth to Yankees fans and New York’s coaching staff.
