Yankees linked to moving on from Jazz Chisholm Jr.

As he heads for a polarizing free agency, Jazz Chisholm Jr‘s time in New York could very well be over. Jazz was a coveted trade acquisition for the Yankees in 2024, delivering big postseason moments in each of his first two seasons in pinstripes and helping to fix the Yankees’ gap at second left by Gleyber Torres’ departure.

However, after a disappointing 2026 season with the Yankees, capped off by a wild throw from second base that allowed the Rays to strike first in an eventually devastating ALDS Game 2 loss, the Yankees look to have miscalculated how Jazz’s mentality would change in the Bronx.

A Complicated Legacy

According to NJ.com’s Randy Miller, when Jazz was still with the Miami Marlins, Yankee legends Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly, both then in the Marlins’ front office, took Jazz aside and told him his mental lapses were holding him back.

“You have superstar talent, you have to get your head right. You have to focus, you have to make this a priority,” Miller wrote as a summation of Jeter and Mattingly’s separate conversations with the Marlins’ young star.

According to Miller, the Yankees knew these conversations happened, and knew they were acquiring a player who played flashy and loose – sometimes too loose – but hoped some of the Yankees’ veterans would be able to help him tighten up his play.

“It’s not like Chisholm’s reputation was a mystery to them. But they thought that a clubhouse filled with veterans like Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger and Gerrit Cole could get through to him,” Miller said in a conversation with fellow insider Bob Klapisch.

Jazz’s complicated legacy with the Yankees certainly took on new dimensions this season. Jazz was involved in a disagreement with Aaron Boone over him eating a lollipop midgame. Not only that, but Jazz – ever confident – all-but promised the media he’d hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases, only to fall very short of that mark in 2026.

Will The Yankees Bring Back Jazz Chisholm in Free Agency?

The Yankees have a fair dilemma with Jazz in free agency. Jazz said after the Yankees’ ALDS sweep that he wants to remain in pinstripes after this season. Despite that, the Yankees also balked on any opportunity to extend Jazz before his free agency.

The team has several in-house options to replace Jazz at second if he were to depart. If they feel he’s improved defensively at the position, they could slot in Luis Garcia Jr at second. Another option they looked into was playing former top shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe at second.

It’s a complicated legacy for Jazz Chisholm Jr in the Bronx, and Miller’s recent report only adds another layer. The Yankees knew about his demeanor in Miami, only for the friction to continue in the Bronx. It’ll set up quite the intriguing storyline going into the winter months.
