The Philadelphia Phillies are certainly a team to watch as the offseason carries on. It is no secret that the Phillies are looking to upgrade their roster, as they have high expectations heading into the 2026 campaign.
The Phillies had a strong 2025 regular season, as they finished the year with an impressive 96-66 record. However, their postseason came to a frustrating end, as they lost to the two-time reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series 3-1.
Now, after a tough postseason, the Phillies have been active this offseason. They notably re-signed star slugger Kyle Schwarber to a five-year deal. They also brought in a handful of new players, like Brad Keller, Adolis Garcia, Jonathan Bowlan, and Kyle Backhus.
Yet, the Phillies should not be done yet, as they are continuing to be linked to several remaining free agents. Bo Bichette is their top target, but they are now also being connected to an interesting Boston Red Sox starting free agent pitcher.
Phillies Named Potential Fit for Red Sox Free Agent Lucas Giolito
In a recent article for ESPN, David Schoenfield took a look at a handful of remaining free agents and listed multiple potential landing spots for them. Boston Red Sox free agent pitcher Lucas Giolito was among the players discussed, and it makes sense when noting that he is one of the better pitchers still available on the market.
When it came to Giolito, Schoenfield listed the Phillies as among the potential landing spots for the 6-foot-6 starting pitcher.
When looking at the Phillies’ current roster, it is easy to understand why they are being considered a potential fit for Giolito. If the National League East club successfully signed him, he would give them another dependable starter as they look to go on a real run in 2026. He would also upgrade the bottom half of their rotation, so it certainly would make sense for the Phillies to make a big push for him this winter.
Giolito is also coming off a strong bounce-back year with the Red Sox. In 26 games for the American League East club, the 6-foot-6 right-hander recorded a 10-4 record, a 3.41 ERA, and 121 strikeouts. With numbers like these, there is no question that the former All-Star proved to be a nice addition to the Red Sox’s pitching rotation, and he very well could be the same for the Phillies if they successfully sign him.
Giolito Is Expected to Have Several Suitors
While Schoenfield named the Phillies as a potential fit for Giolito, he also mentioned multiple other clubs as possible landing spots for the nine-year veteran. The Texas Rangers, Athletics, Los Angeles Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates were all named possible suitors for the veteran starter.
With Giolito just having a strong year for the Red Sox, there is no question that he has the potential to generate a good amount of interest as the offseason rolls on. It will be interesting to see if the Phillies end up being the team that lands him, but the fit looks good on paper.
