On Friday August 1, 2025, the San Francisco Giants called up OF Grant McCray from AAA Sacramento.

McCray is a former third round pick by the Giants in the 2019 MLB Draft and just last season was a Giants Top 10 prospect. McCray was in the big leagues for the Giants near the end of 2024 to help the Giants navigate Jung Hoo Lee’s injury, and he showed flashes of stardom.

In just his second game on August 15, 2025, McCray went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the Giants’ 6-0 win over the Atlanta Braves

The highlight of his young career came on September 8, 2025 against the San Diego Padres. McCray had 2 home runs and 5 RBI in a 6-3 Giants win.

He also had a few highlight reel catches in the outfield throughout his time in San Francisco.

Ultimately though, McCray’s play in 2024 was inconsistent. He hit .202 with 5 home runs and 10 RBI on the season.

This is the first time McCray has rejoined San Francisco in 2025. He has hit .260 with 14 home runs and 63 RBI in AAA Sacramento this season.

McCray Replaces Mike Yastrzemski On the Roster

The reason Grant McCray is getting called up is because the Giants traded away OF Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday July 31, 2025.

It was part of a larger “soft sell” strategy the Giants employed at this trade deadline, where they traded away expendable established stars in exchange for young minor league prospects. The Giants also dealt away relief pitchers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval

Yastrzemski has been a mainstay in the Giants outfield since 2019. With him gone, the Giants’ young outfield prospects are going to have a chance to compete to be the everyday right fielder, as well as the backup fourth outfielder.

Luis Matos is likely going to get the longest look as the starting right fielder, but McCray will certainly have a chance to show the coaching staff what he can do.

Wade Meckler, Drew Gilbert, Marco Luciano, Daniel Johnson and Hunter Bishop could all also get a shot depending on how Matos and McCray perform.

Giants Also Called Up A Pitcher

In addition to McCray, the Giants summoned Taiwanese RHP Kai-Wei Teng from AAA Sacramento.

Teng, 26, has worked primarily as a starting pitcher in the Giants minor league system, until this season. In 25 games with AAA Sacramento (4 starts), Teng has a 3.67 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 54 innings.

Teng also briefly played for San Francisco in 2024. It was shaky though: he had a 9.82 ERA in 4 games for the Giants (0 starts).

The right-hander will more than likely just make a start or two in place of injured No. 3 Giants starter Landen Roupp. After Roupp returns, Teng will likely be sent back to AAA. Unless he vastly outperforms No. 5 starter Carson Whisenhunt or San Francisco wants to keep him in their new look bullpen.

Teng is scheduled to make his first career MLB start on Saturday August 2 against the New York Mets

Giants fans, are you excited to see Grant McCray and Kai-Wei Teng get another shot in San Francisco?
