On Wednesday July 30, 2025, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the San Francisco Giants have traded elite relief RHP Tyler Rogers in exchange for two top Mets prospects, RHP Blade Tidwell and OF Drew Gilbert, as well as RHP José Buttó.
The submariner Rogers, 34, is one of the longest tenured Giants. Since his debut in 2019, he has been a high-usage reliever for San Francisco. He currently leads the MLB in appearances in 2025 with 53 and has a stellar 1.80 ERA.
Overall, he has a 2.79 career ERA out of the bullpen in his seven seasons, all with San Francisco.
Giants fans will no doubt be sad to see Tyler Rogers go, and miss his iconic delivery.
But Rogers’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he was set to command a steep free agent market for a reliever.
Plus, the blow is definitely softened by the return that President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey was able to receive, which is remarkable for a rental player.
Tidwell And Gilbert Are Top Prospects
Blade Tidwell is only 24 years old and he has a lot of potential to be a star for the Giants.
Tidwell was drafted in the second round by the Mets back in 2022 out of the University of Tennessee. He’s a physically imposing prospect at 6’4’’ and 207 pounds, and generates good mid-90s velocity.
He’s ranked the No. 10 prospect in the Mets system. He’s primarily been a starting pitcher throughout his time in the Mets organization. Overall, he has a 4.13 ERA and 372 strikeouts in 326.2 innings throughout his four seasons in the minors.
It goes without saying that the Giants need starting pitching help. Tidwell is too raw to be the obvious, immediate answer, but it’s clear the Giants have that at least in the back of their mind.
Drew Gilbert is another Top-20 Mets prospect, at No. 12. Gilbert was actually a first round pick, No. 28 overall, by the Houston Astros in 2022.
Gilbert is a plus defender who projects as a center fielder, or right fielder due to his elite arm strength. He has also been an above average minor league hitter, with a .260/.359/.452 slash line in the minor leagues.
It’s also interesting to note that the Giants have shown some weakness in the outfield this season. Helot Ramos has been poor defensively and Mike Yastrzemski is having another below average offensive season. Could Gilbert be the answer?
Only time will tell what Posey’s plan is for Tidwell and Gilbert, but it’s safe to say that the Giants got a steal in these two AAA prospects even if they can’t contribute at the MLB level immediately.
Giants Also Immediately Got Rogers’s Replacement
Not only that, but the Giants kept their bullpen solid in the Rogers deal.
The third player in the deal is RHP Jose Buttó, who has been a very solid young reliever for New York so far in his career. He’s only 24 years old, and in around 2 seasons of work, he has a solid 3.45 ERA.
He should slot in as Rogers’s replacement immediately, and the Giants bullpen should hardly miss a beat.
Buster Posey obviously was able to take advantage of a weak relief pitcher market and get a return package that appears to be an overpay by the Mets.
Giants fans, are you excited for Blade Tidwell, Drew Gilbert and Jose Buttó? Are you sad to see Tyler Rogers go? What move should the Giants make next?
