Seattle Mariners star reliever Matt Brash abruptly left Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins after two pitches. Brash has had a tough history with injuries. He undertook Tommy John surgery early in the 2024 season after experiencing discomfort in his elbow during Spring Training.
After two pitches, Mariners MVP candidate Cal Raleigh quickly called timeout. Brash showed signs of pain right away. The infield, Mariners manager Dan Wilson, and trainer Blake Griffin all approached the mound.
Gabe Speier took his place in the bottom of the 8th inning. This was Brash’s second appearance in a row and fourth in the last six days.
Matt Brash is Vital to the Mariners Bullpen

GettyBrash has been one of the more valuable relievers in baseball since his arrival in 2022.
Brash has had a phenomenal start to the season not allowing a run in 11.1 innings over 13 games. While his strikeouts per nine (6.35 strikeouts per nine; 11.75 is his career average) is at the lowest rate of his career, Brash’s walks per nine is also at the lowest rate of his career (1.59 walks per nine; 4.10 is his career average).
Over his career, Brash has been consistently dominant, pitching with a 3.10 ERA and a dominant whiff rate. He’s accumulated 3.7 wins above replacement over 180 innings of relief pitching.
So far in 2026, the Mariners bullpen ranks 5th in ERA and 7th in wins above replacement. Brash is tied with Eduard Bazardo and Jose Ferrer in fWAR so far this season, leading the team. Assume Bazardo and Ferrer will take over those high leverage situations if Brash is sidelined for any amount of time.
Mariners Upcoming Schedule

GettyMariners come back home after the series in Minnesota.
The Seattle Mariners have a travel day tomorrow after the series concludes against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. They come back to Seattle to have a three game series against the Kansas City Royals. Following, they play another three game set against the Atlanta Braves before heading back on the road to play the Chicago White Sox.
If Brash has another bad injury, expect a roster transaction in the coming days. Bryce Miller currently is on a rehab assignment in AAA, but the Mariners will need another bullpen arm if that is who they decide to activate off the injured list. If the Mariners promote a reliever from AAA, expect the name to be Troy Taylor, Robinson Ortiz, or Yosver Zulueta.
