Gabriel Speier: Breaking News

The Mariners placed Speier on the 15-day injured list Monday with left shoulder inflammation, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. It's unclear how long Speier has been bothered by the shoulder issue, but he hasn't pitched since last Wednesday and was not sharp in that outing, retiring just two of six batters. Speier has been a workhorse out of the Seattle bullpen, so it's a sizable loss. He's made 15 appearances this season, posting a 2.92 ERA and 12:5 K:BB over 12.1 frames.

Speier picked up his first save of the season Friday against the Angels, allowing one unearned run with no hits or walks while striking out one across one inning. Speier came on to pitch the 10th inning after Andres Munoz pitched a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts. Speier allowed the designated runner Oswald Peraza following a groundout and sacrifice fly but closed the door by striking out Yoan Moncada. Speier (0-1) has a 5.40 ERA and 4:0 K:BB across 3.1 innings to begin the season.

Speier signed a one-year contract with the Mariners to avoid arbitration Thursday,Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Terms of the deal aren't yet known, though Speier earned $845,000 in 2025 -- his first year of arbitration eligibility. He's coming off of an excellent season, maintaining a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 62.0 frames while also earning 24 holds.
