Chase Briscoe was one of many who was pleased to see Ty Gibbs roll into victory lane on Sunday for the first time in his NASCAR Cup Series career.
Briscoe, who has been teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing with Gibbs since 2025, came home fifth in Sunday’s Food City 500 at the Bristol Motor Speedway.
Meanwhile, Gibbs fended off two of the best in the business in Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson to nab his first career Cup victory in his 131st start.
Following his teammate’s triumph, Briscoe dropped a prediction about the driver of the No. 54 car’s future.
Briscoe on Gibbs’ future: ‘Wouldn’t surprise me if he went on a tear’
Briscoe knows Gibbs has been through a lot.
The night after winning the 2022 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship, Coy Gibbs, Ty’s dad, tragically passed away in his sleep.
On the competition side of his life, Gibbs had come close to winning, but fell short time and time again.
Finally on Sunday, Gibbs put it all together and wheeled his Monster Energy Toyota to the checkered flag first.
Although there might be critics, Briscoe believes Gibbs is overlooked.
Now that the North Carolina native has his first victory under his belt, Briscoe said he would not be shocked if the wins start coming in bunches.
“He doesn’t get the credit he deserves a lot of the time, so just really, really happy for him. It’s the first of many and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went on a tear,” Briscoe said.
Chase Briscoe on Ty Gibbs’ ability: ‘Amazing race car driver’
Briscoe had high praise for Gibbs’ talent behind the wheel.
Gibbs captured the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship in 2022, and was elevated to the Cup level the following year.
Amid his fourth full-time season in the Cup Series, the 23-year-old finally snagged a win at NASCAR’s highest level.
Briscoe said when you have great success in the O’Reilly Series, expectations can be high when heading to the Cup level.
While it might have taken some time, Briscoe does not doubt that Gibbs is an elite talent behind the wheel.
“When you dominate at the [O’Reilly] level like he did, I’m sure that you think you’re going to win a Cup race really quickly. It’s hard. For him to do it today like he did, on old tires, beating the two guys that were dominant all day long — Ty’s an amazing race car driver,” Briscoe said.
Gibbs paced the field for the final 25 laps in Sunday’s Food City 500 to snag the win.
Meanwhile, it was a quality showing for Briscoe, who posted his second top-five finish of the 2026 season.
Briscoe endured some early-season woes, finishing 36th or worse in three of the first four races. After a slow start to the campaign, the driver of the No. 19 now finds himself 17th in the points standings, one point below the Chase cut line.
Meanwhile, Gibbs has been on a roll.
On top of notching his first career win, Gibbs has finished no worse than sixth in the last six races. He is currently fourth in the points standings.
