Shane van Gisbergen is the 2025 NASCAR Rookie of the Year. He made history this season with five wins. The most ever by a first-year driver in NASCAR’s top division. Van Gisbergen switched from Australian Supercars to NASCAR. His smooth transition and record-breaking season have earned him a spot among NASCAR’s most talked-about new stars. Here’s how he pulled it off.
Shane van Gisbergen’s Record-Breaking Season
The first full NASCAR season of Shane van Gisbergen was beyond belief. He made five victories and thus broke the record of the rookie. His fifth victory was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, which was also his fifth consecutive win on the road course.
The whole thing was initiated with his winning debut in 2023 at the Chicago Street Course, a race that left the fans and the veterans in amazement. He was victorious again in June 2025, but this time it was at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, the place of the very first NASCAR race on that track.
After the last race, van Gisbergen made a recap of the season.
Not the way we wanted to finish our season, lacked overall grip today. Just something to work on and learn from as we prepare to come back here next season. It’s been an epic year with the @TeamTrackhouse 88 team! pic.twitter.com/sKAizX2xwz

What was most important to him and which he really showed in his message, was the fact that he kept on learning, getting better, and even after a record year, still keeping his feet on the ground.

NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year Rules
The NASCAR Rookie of the Year title is given as a token of recognition to the most outstanding first-year driver of the season.
Van Gisbergen followed every regulation and showed that he was the most worthy of the accolade. The award is for the most promising young players of the sport. His five triumphs and consistent showing were quite enough to bring him into the limelight of 2025 as the most likely candidate for the award.
