The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren appear to be negotiating over two different versions of the same player.
Duren’s camp sees the 22-year-old who became an All-Star, earned All-NBA honors and developed into Cade Cunningham’s most productive running mate during a 60-win season.
Detroit cannot forget the center whose influence shrank in the playoffs and whose spot in closing lineups occasionally went to Paul Reed.
That disagreement over which version should determine Duren’s next contract has created more than a financial stalemate. Negotiations have become “noxious,” a league source told NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin.
ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill added that feedback delivered during the process included things a player “should not have to hear.”
Those reports make the tone of the talks nearly as important as the eventual dollar figure.

Duren produced the strongest season of his four-year career, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% from the field.
His screens created space for Cunningham. His vertical threat punished defenses for sending extra help toward Detroit’s lead guard. His improved work around the rim helped the Pistons build an identity around size, defense and paint pressure.
Duren’s All-NBA third-team selection made him eligible for a five-year contract worth up to approximately $287 million. Helin reported that Duren views himself as a maximum-contract player, although a standard 25% maximum worth approximately $239 million over five years could satisfy his camp.
Detroit reportedly has discussed an annual salary in the lower-$30 million range.
That number would place Duren near Walker Kessler, who received an average of $32.5 million per season from the Lakers, and below Alperen Sengun’s $37 million annual average with Houston.
The Pistons clearly value Duren. Their offer suggests they are unwilling to treat his regular-season résumé as the complete evaluation.

Duren’s postseason production dropped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Opponents crowded his rolls, challenged him physically and forced him to defend in space. During the second-round series against Cleveland, coach J.B. Bickerstaff occasionally trusted Reed in critical minutes instead.
That gave Detroit a reason to resist the maximum. It also created the possibility that the Pistons could overplay their leverage.
Duren can accept a $9.6 million qualifying offer, gain veto power over any trade and enter unrestricted free agency next summer. Doing so would be financially risky, but another All-NBA season could create a larger market outside Detroit.
He has offered no public clues about his intentions. 6ABC’s Jason Dumas asked Duren about the contentious negotiations during a hometown event in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, but Duren “respectfully declined” to answer, Dumas reported.
Helin suggested a five-year agreement between $190 million and $200 million as sensible middle ground.
Detroit must decide how much of a discount one uneven postseason warrants. It also must consider the cost of making a young cornerstone feel unwanted while pursuing it.
