The Golden State Warriors are facing a very uncertain future. Even the status of head coach Steve Kerr is unknown heading into the 2026 NBA offseason.
Kerr, who has been the head coach for the Warriors since back in the 2014-15 season, has led the team to a lot of success. Even thinking about a change on the sideline is weird. However, there is a very real chance that Golden State could be facing that change.
Since taking over as the Warriors’ head coach, Kerr has compiled a 604-353 overall record, which is good enough for a 63.1 winning percentage. He has also led Golden State to four NBA Finals victories.
Unfortunately, the last few years have seen the Warriors fall off from contention. They weren’t even able to get into the playoffs this year.
With that being said, who could replace Kerr if Golden State and he decide to part ways?
Warriors Linked to Surprising Former NBA Star to Replace Steve Kerr
Quite a few names are going to come up as options for the Warriors. One intriguing option would be former NBA star Jerry Stackhouse.
On SI’s Joey Akeley has named Stackhouse as a name to watch for Golden State.
“Stackhouse doesn’t have NBA head coaching experience, but he did coach the Raptors D-League team and was named D-League Coach of the Year in 2017,” Akeley wrote. “He then coached Vanderbilt from 2019 to 2024, which did not go smoothly, as he finished 70-92 in five seasons. In fairness to him, he didn’t have the quality of rosters to set him up for success.”
In addition to Stackhouse, the other two names mentioned as possible options were Luke Walton and Terry Stotts.
Golden State’s Future Outside of Kerr Is Also Uncertain
According to a report from ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater, the Warriors could make aggressive changes if Kerr decides to leave town. They might even head into a rebuild, which could make players like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler available.
Heading into the offseason, all eyes will be on Golden State. A rebuild would have a chance to shake up the rest of the NBA with the ripple effects.
Or, it’s also possible that Kerr and the Warriors decide to run it back. With a healthy Butler and a strong offseason push for another star, Golden State could be right back in contention next season.
Expect to hear more news and rumors about the Warriors’ plans in the near future. Those plans will all start with Kerr making a decision about his future.
