Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr acknowledged this week that he has had difficult, candid conversations with franchise cornerstone Draymond Green, whose name has surfaced prominently as Golden State pushes to land two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.
Speaking on 95.7 The Game’s Willard & Dibs, Kerr offered rare insight into the emotional toll the trade rumors have taken on Green — a player synonymous with the Warriors’ dynasty.
“[Draymond and I] have talked about the trade rumors,” Kerr said. “I think what’s really tricky for Draymond is this is the only place he’s ever known. He’s going to have a statue outside the building someday.
“It’s a really weird position for him to be in, for sure, because there’s never really been a time in his entire career where he’s had to think about putting on another jersey. He’s never been through this, and it’s definitely been on his mind.”
Draymond Green Responds to Trade Speculation
Despite the swirling speculation, Green has publicly struck a tone of calm and pragmatism.
“I’ve been here for 14 years,” Green said Friday night when asked about his future. “I have no reason to sit and worry about leaving. But if I’m traded, that’s part of the business. I ain’t losing no sleep, though. I slept great last night.”
Green added that he has not sought clarity from the front office, maintaining his usual approach.
“I’m not going to go up there and be like, ‘Yo, so tell me what y’all doing,’” Green said. “I’ll be the same as I always am. My phone is always on. I’m always willing to collaborate in any way I can.”
Green’s Name Now Part of Active Warriors’ Giannis Trade Frameworks
While Green has downplayed the uncertainty, multiple reports suggest the risk is real.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Green has officially been included in trade frameworks discussed by the Warriors as they attempt to complete a blockbuster deal for Antetokounmpo.
“The Golden State Warriors have involved Draymond Green in active trade conversation in advance of Thursday’s deadline, league sources told ESPN,” Slater reported. “Putting his 14-season run with the franchise in jeopardy.”
Slater added that Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and controlling owner Joe Lacob remain highly motivated to get a Giannis deal “across the finish line,” with Green’s salary and on-court value playing a central role in those talks with Milwaukee.
Green Aware of Milwaukee Possibility
Reporting from The Athletic reinforces that Green and his representation are not blindsided by the situation.
“To that point, league sources say Green and his camp are well aware that the prospect of him being sent to Milwaukee is very real,” wrote Sam Amick.
Amick cited earlier reporting from Nick Friedell indicating that Jimmy Butler — sidelined by a torn ACL — has received strong assurances from Golden State that the franchise intends to stand by him during his lengthy rehabilitation. That reality, combined with salary-matching rules, makes Green the most viable high-impact veteran contract the Warriors can realistically move.
“As for Green,” Amick added, “the chance remains — if the Warriors found a way to pull this off — that he might push his way to another team or, perhaps, go the free agency route this summer.”
Why Green Matters in Giannis Negotiations
From Milwaukee’s perspective, Green represents immediate impact.
A nine-time All-Defensive Team selection and the defensive anchor of four championship teams since 2015, Green offers playoff-tested leadership and versatility — attributes the Bucks value if they choose to remain competitive while retooling around Antetokounmpo’s departure.
Golden State’s broader offer is equally compelling. In addition to Green, the Warriors can include Jonathan Kuminga, salary fillers, up to four future first-round picks, and a pick swap — a package widely viewed by league executives as the most pick-heavy available among reported suitors.
Those rivals include the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves, none of whom can match Golden State’s combination of draft capital and proven veteran talent.
A Defining Moment for the Warriors’ Dynasty Core

For the Warriors, the stakes extend beyond any single transaction.
Green, alongside Stephen Curry, has been a foundational pillar of one of the NBA’s most successful dynasties. Trading him would represent not just a strategic pivot, but an emotional rupture with the franchise’s past.
Yet the pursuit of Antetokounmpo — a generational superstar in his prime — forces Golden State to weigh legacy against opportunity.
As the deadline approaches, Kerr’s words underscore the gravity of that choice. For the first time in his storied career, Draymond Green must confront a future that may not include the only jersey he has ever worn.
