Steph Curry and Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors have won four NBA titles together.

There has been plenty of speculation about Steve Kerr’s future with the Golden State Warriors since their season ended at the NBA Play-In Tournament.

Kerr’s contract is expiring at the end of the season, and he’s expected to discuss his future with the franchise in the coming weeks. There are rumors stating that he’s likely leaving the Warriors after 12 successful years.

Speaking to The New Yorker, the four-time NBA champion coach opened up about his future in Golden State while also hinting at how long Steph Curry plans to play basketball.

In a perfect world, Steve Kerr would have loved it if he was leaving the Warriors at the same time as Steph Curry and Draymond Green. It could have been an easy decision since they are opening the path for the franchise to start rebuilding.

“I don’t want to abandon those guys,” Kerr said. “If Steph and Draymond were retiring this year, I think this would be an easy decision: we all go out together and the organization takes their new path.”

However, that’s not the case since Curry has a year left in his contract and Draymond has a player option for next season. Kerr also hinted that Curry is likely to play more than one more year before finishing his legendary career, adding that it might be linked to his own future as well.

“I think Steph’s going to play another couple of years, and I think we can still do some good things together,” Kerr said. “But these are all conversations that will happen in the next week or two, and we’ll figure it out. And whatever happens, it’s going to end well. I know that, because it’s too important not to.”

It’s going to be an interesting month of May in Golden State. Kerr has helped bring four NBA championships to the Bay Area, but the Warriors reportedly want him to change his coaching philosophy if he plans to stay, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater.

Steph Curry is entering the final year of his current contract. He is set to earn $62.6 million next season and is eligible to sign an extension.

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, the expectation around the NBA and the Warriors is that Curry is likely to sign a new contract this summer. It’s just a matter of how long since the two-time MVP turned 38 years old last March 14.

“Steph Curry will be retiring with the Warriors,” Siegel said. “It’s just a matter of when… It doesn’t seem like it’s going to be anytime soon. He’s going to be signing a contract extension with them this year… It’s going to be somewhere in that two, three-year window.”

Curry is coming off an injury-shortened campaign, playing in just 43 games due to a runner’s knee. He still averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
