The Golden State Warriors have a lot of work to do this offseason after missing out on the playoffs entirely. The team is continuing to frantically search for ways to build a championship contender around Stephen Curry before his career comes to an end, and that could lead to some widespread changes over the next few months.

For the first time since he took over as the Warriors’ head coach, it feels like Steve Kerr‘s future with the team is truly up in the air. Head coach changes are already happening across the league, and now that the Orlando Magic have fired their own head coach, Jamahl Mosley, it sounds like Golden State will be operating with an increased sense of urgency when discussing Kerr’s future with the team.

Warriors Set to Resume Discussions Regarding Steve Kerr’s Future

Since taking over as Golden State’s head coach ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, Kerr has been viewed as arguably the best head coach in the league. He has led the Warriors to four championships, while also having to manage some big personalities (such as Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, and Jimmy Butler) along the way.

The 2025-26 campaign seemed to take a toll on Kerr, though. With Curry missing half of the season due to a lingering right knee injury and Butler tearing his ACL in January, the Dubs struggled to piece things together. As the season dragged on, rumors began to emerge indicating that Kerr could very well step down from his role with the team this offseason.

With Mosley getting fired by the Magic in the wake of their first-round playoff defeat at the hands of the Detroit Pistons, coaching changes are being made across the league. With that in mind, the Warriors need to figure out where things stand with Kerr, which could reportedly lead to major discussions about his future taking place as soon as Monday.

“League sources saying Golden State is expected to resume discussions with Steve Kerr as early as today,” NBA insider Marc Stein reported in a post on X.

Regardless of whether or not the team wants Kerr to return, it needs to figure out what his plans are so that it can begin mapping out its offseason. If he does decide to stick around, that gives the Warriors a head start on their work over the next few months, but if he leaves, the first order of business will involve finding his replacement. With the Magic now looking for a new head coach, too, that’s just another competitor that the Dubs may have to fend off.

Reports indicate that ESPN is making a big push to convince Kerr to leave the Warriors and join them as a studio analyst, so it seems like all options are on the table for him. At this point, Golden State really just needs some clarity on its head coach situation, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see Kerr’s future get resolved at some point this week.
