The Los Angeles Lakers have a cloudy future ahead with the veteran forward, Jarred Vanderbilt.
After Vanderbilt’s 2025-2026 NBA season ended on an awkward note, which included a heated incident with the head coach JJ Redick, his chances of getting traded don’t seem to be guaranteed at this time.
When it comes to LA–nothing should be ruled out outside of Luka Doncic–but one Lakers-focused piece suggests that Vanderbilt shouldn’t be a trade block candidate at this time.

“The Lakers should be in no rush to trade Vando,” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote on August 23.
“They dumped Dorian Finney-Smith just months after Doncic arrived, despite their close relationship. It turned out to be the right call, but Doncic’s happiness should be most important, especially with ownership changing hands for the second time in a short window.”

Lately, one of the most notable topics surrounding the Lakers is the seemingly budding friendship between Doncic and Vanderbilt.
Seeing as though Doncic is the true face of the Lakers’ franchise these days, keeping him happy is the top priority. The Lakers ensured they would bring back Austin Reaves, who developed a close relationship with Doncic over the past season. If Vanderbilt is tight with the veteran guard, then the front office would surely think twice about cutting ties with the 27-year-old forward.

The Lakers acquired Vanderbilt during the 2022-2023 NBA season. In a three-team deal, Los Angeles picked up the forward, with hopes that he could boost their championship chances.
Vanderbilt’s production has regressed since he arrived. His first 26-game run with the team included averages of 7.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. Last season, Vanderbilt averaged 4.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 0.8 steals in 65 games.
The Lakers have Vanderbilt under contract for at least one more season. In 2026-2027, he’s slated to make $12.4 million. After the season is up, Vanderbilt will have a $13.2 million player option on the table.
From a personal standpoint, Vanderbilt would be wise to pick it up. However, it’s unclear if the Lakers will be able to maintain their interest in the veteran forward or not. Assuming Doncic has plenty of power, Vanderbilt’s spot on the Lakers’ roster could be safe.
