The Los Angeles Lakers, like the rest of the NBA world, don’t have a sure idea about what LeBron James will do next. While the Lakers locked Luka Doncic down for the next few years, James picked up his player option to set himself up as a free agent next summer, sparking speculation about his next move.

While the public remains uninformed, James’ agent, Rich Paul, spoke to ESPN’s Shams Charania to offer a bit more clarity on the situation.

It’s important not to worry about the future when it comes to LeBron James,Charania said, quoting Paul, who he spoke to earlier in the day.Just appreciate the present and also maximizing his present. And that, obviously, that onus, potentially falling on the Lakers, and what team they put around him.”

In an offseason survey by ESPN asking questions to 20 different coaches, executives, and scouts, the majority believe James will be with the Lakers next season, with seven people making that prediction.

Rich Paul On LeBron James’ Future

While multiple insiders have addressed lingering rumors and offered minimal updates over the summer, Charania’s insight from Paul is the biggest update on James since the two talked when the 21-time All-Star picked up his player option.

Most notably, Paul’s comments saying tonot worry about the futurecould be a cause for concern for the Lakers front office. According to Charania, the agent also gave other reasons as to why James would make the decision to keep playing, whether it be in Los Angeles or somewhere else.

It’s obvious. How does he feel about the Lakers going into the season as the year continues on? Can they be a contender moving forward? And I think the other thing that also sits here as well is Bryce James is going to start his freshman year at college,Charania added. How does he look as a prospect? How does he play into the 2026 NBA Draft? These are all things, I think, LeBron James is going to be reminded of.”

Charania added that James himself is still unsure about how long he wants to continue to play. But while Paul said not to worry about the future, that’s exactly what the entire NBA world, as well as James, seems to be doing.

When speaking in an interview with Complex, James also kept his plans close to his chest.

I‘m not hinting at anything,James said.Obviously, I know I’m on the other side of the hump, for sure. Come on now, I’m not about to play another 23 years, that’s for sure, and I’m not about to play another 10. I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is, I’m not there yet.”

Differing Thoughts On What James And Lakers Will Do

In response to Paul’s comments on James, ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne gave a bold prediction as it relates to the Lakers. She believed that if the team chooses to trade the four-time champion, it will happen before the season begins, or shortly into the team’s 2025-26 campaign.

“If they were going to do anything, it would likely have to be before the season even started, because they are in the second apron,Shelbourne said on NBA Today. It’s based on how the Lakers do. If they’re winning, they’re rolling, I think he blends in. If they struggle out of the gates, if they hit a rough spot, or if somebody has an injury, then I think we have a lot to talk about.”

Bobby Marks shared the same sentiment, saying the Lakers record will be a big factor for James’ impending decision.

“What happens if you are a .500 team and you are competing for the Play-In. Does that change as far as LeBron’s mentality for competing for a championship?Marks asked.

In the ESPN survey, an unnamed Eastern Conference executive remained unsure as to whether James will stay with the Lakers or head somewhere else.

If I was taking the Lakers or the field, they said,I’d take the field. But I’ll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him.

Tim Bontempts, who completed the ESPN survey, also said another unnamed executive believed this upcoming season would be his last.

But for now, James’ future remains unknown. While Paul doesn’t want people to worry about the future, it will likely be a leading storyline in the NBA until a decision is announced.
