The Miami Heat are having a rough start to the Giannis Antetokounmpo era with a 3-6 start and some brutal losses. NBA fans expected Giannis to have an instant impact making Miami viable contenders in the Eastern Conference. However, the team is slowly figuring out how to play together and struggling to get wins to keep pace with the top East teams.
NBA reporter Sam Amick shared that Antetokounmpo surprisingly skipped the mandated post-game interview with the media after Thursday’s blowout loss:
“After the loss to the Warriors last night, Giannis Antetokounmpo made the rare choice not to fulfill his media obligations. The frustration, for him and the rest of the Heat, is surely building.
The deeper issue, which coach Erik Spoelstra discussed at length before the game, is that this team that so many expected to be elite defensively continues to be atrocious on that end.”
The Heat played the second half of a brutal back-to-back that saw them competing until they got too tired in the second half against the Golden State Warriors. Miami defenders could not keep pace with Stephen Curry and some of his younger Warriors’ teammates. Antetokounmpo skipping the press conference showed he’s starting to get frustrated as well.
Heat Fans Should Fear Giannis Antetokounmpo Leaving
One major concern for Miami is that Antetokounmpo has a player option to end his contract after this season and enter free agency. The Heat took a calculated gamble by sending a handful of younger players and draft picks to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis.
Both Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez have looked impressive for the Bucks, and young big man Kel’el Ware has untapped potential to make this trade quite risky. Antetokounmpo leaving after one season could negatively impact Miami’s future after sacrificing so much to start a new era built around him.
Past quotes have seen Giannis revealing how he’s never truly tested the free agent market and wondering if that’s an experience he’d like. Teams like the Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, and every other team with cap space would be ready to aggressively pursuit Antetokounmpo with max contract offers.
Pressure On Miami Heat To Fix Season
No NBA team’s season should be deemed over by the first week of November, unless they experienced a serious injury. However, the deeper East is making things harder for the Heat to form chemistry with Giannis and struggling teammates like Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins.
Antetokounmpo is playing high level basketball and putting up great stats, but that isn’t leading to many wins. Expect Giannis to continue giving his all for the rest of the season and for Miami to look at unique ways to improve the roster. Kyrie Irving has been named as a dream trade target to improve the point guard position.
Dejounte Murray and other names also make sense as talents worth taking the gamble on, but the Heat are limited in tradeable assets. Things are starting terribly to see the pressure stronger than most expected this early. Antetokounmpo and Miami must fix these problems or risk ending the relationship quickly.
