While the latest injury update signals superstar Anthony Edwards is expected to play in Game 1, the Timberwolves will be without Ayo Dosunmu on Monday night.

GettyMINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – APRIL 25: Ayo Dosunmu #13 of the Minnesota Timberwolves celebrates against the Denver Nuggets in the third quarter of Game Four of the First Round of the 2026 NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Target Center on April 25, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Timberwolves defeated the Nuggets 112-96.

Dosunmu had taken a leap for Minnesota while they were without Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, the team’s typical starting backcourt, in the second half of their first-round series against the Nuggets, which included a 43-point performance in Game 4.

However, in the series-clinching Game 6, Dosunmu sat out with the right calf soreness he is still dealing with now. The trade deadline acquisition from the Chicago Bulls had been day-to-day on the Timberwolves’ injury report in the lead-up to the second round, with head coach Chris Finch previously saying Dosunmu had practiced, but just did ‘the light stuff‘ over the weekend.

Heading into Game 1, Dosunmu was listed as questionable with the calf injury. But now, just as Edwards’ status was upgraded, it was the opposite for his backcourt teammate.

Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints was one of the first to comment on the news that was first announced by the Timberwolves PR account on X of Dosunmu being ruled out.

“The Timberwolves have just downgraded Ayo Dosunmu (right calf soreness) from questionable to OUT for tonight’s Game 1 against the Spurs,” he wrote on X.

Without DiVincenzo, Dosunmu was, and still is expected to hold a big role for Minnesota in this series. However, based on the latest update, it just doesn’t look like that will come in Game 1. He and DiVincenzo (Achilles) are the only two players listed as out on the Timberwolves’ injury report.

GettyNEW YORK, NEW YORK – NOVEMBER 05: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves warms up before the game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on November 05, 2025 in New York City.

Edwards suffered a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee just nine days ago in Minnesota’s Game 4 win over Denver. While he was expected to miss at least two weeks, that timeline has drastically shifted over the 30 hours before tipoff of Game 1 against the Spurs.

That began with Edwards being officially listed as questionable for the contest, followed by Shams Charania of ESPN reporting that the star was ramping up his recovery.

But most recently, while reports increased about Edwards’ status heading into Game 1, Charania confirmed that the shooting guard had been cleared by the Timberwolves medical staff was is now expected to suit up on Monday.

“Edwards has tried multiple treatments over the last several days, including hyperbaric chamber sessions, to expedite his timetable,” he added in his reporting. “He will go through his pregame warmups with the plan to play. For the Wolves, an unforeseen healing period over the last 24 hours that has Edwards ready for Game 1.”

According to Jon Krawczysnki of The Athletic, Edwards has been hopeful about a return at some point in the second round. Now, that appears to be the case, as he is expected to play in Game 1. He is still officially questionable, but if things go well, he will get back on the court just nine days after his left knee injury.

Timberwolves vs Spurs Game 1 tips off on Monday, May 4, at 8:30 pm CST and live on NBCSN and Peacock.
