Oklahoma City selected Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft despite already having several young guards on the roster. The move has quickly paid off, with Mitchell emerging as one of the team’s most promising young players.
Last season, Mitchell averaged 13.6 points while becoming Oklahoma City’s second-leading scorer during the postseason at 15.1 points per game. His production has strengthened the belief that he can become an even greater offensive contributor.
His contract only adds to his value.
Mitchell will earn a base salary of $2.85 million during the 2026-27 season. Oklahoma City also holds a team option worth the same amount for 2027-28 before he becomes eligible for free agency in 2028.

During last season’s Western Conference Finals, injuries limited Oklahoma City’s offensive options after both Mitchell and Jalen Williams missed significant time, forcing other players into larger scoring roles.
If Mitchell develops into a dependable third scoring option behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams, Holmgren could spend more energy anchoring the defense instead of carrying a larger offensive workload.
Mitchell’s emergence also strengthens Oklahoma City’s overall depth. The Thunder are expected to lean on their young guards after reshaping the roster this offseason, and Mitchell has already shown he can handle increased responsibility on both ends of the floor.
