The Oklahoma City Thunder are undergoing major in-season changes less than two weeks into the year.

Oklahoma City is seeking to win a second NBA title in three years, but injuries are getting in the way. This includes serious ailments that are impacting Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.

How do the Thunder operate during a time that many things are going against them? Read more on the most recent signing GM Sam Presit is making below.

Thunder Sign Veteran Wing to Fill Final Roster Spot

Oklahoma City and Presti are moving quickly to quell roster concerns. This became clear on Friday, when the Thunder agreed to terms with veteran wing Ochai Agbaji (Shams Charania).

“The Oklahoma City Thunder are signing forward Ochai Agbaji, filling their open roster spot, sources tell ESPN.”
Agbaji, 26, is receiving an opportunity to play for his fourth franchise in regular season action. The 6’5″ G/F brings a bevy of experience to the table, as he was a star at the University of Kansas for four seasons.
The first four seasons in the NBA have produced more tepid results to this point. Agbaji has seen high points such as shooting 39.9% from three-point range during the 2024-25 season for the Toronto Raptors. He has also seen low points, including shooting just 18.5% from three across 42 appearances for the Raptors last season.
The Wisconsin native spent the offseason ramp-up with the New York Knicks, becoming a victim of the last round of roster cuts.
Now, he receives another chance with an organization that has championship pedigree.

What Move Means For Oklahoma City

This is clearly a move that Presti is telegraphing. Agbaji fills an immediate roster need above all else. The long-term losses of Williams and Wallace, as well as Alex Caruso’s short-term injury necessitate an addition. Presti leaving the 15th roster spot open was specifically for a moment such as now.

Beyond the immediate need is the on-court and culture fit that Agbaji brings. The wing has championship pedigree in his past, and is a low-usage player in any offensive context. He will be able to co-exist with players such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jared McCain, adding value as a stationary shooter, and off-ball mover.

Perhaps the most crucial positive Agbagi brings the Thunder is defense. The versatility Agbaji provides will be crucial to Oklahoma City, even if he only sees the floor in small doses.

Does this trade mean anything more for the Thunder’s future personnel arrangements? Signing Agbaji could mean that the Thunder are simply plugging a short-term need. It could also mean that Presti is creating a buffer for the roster in the event that a major trade comes into play.

It will be fascinating to witness how the next several weeks treat Oklahoma City. The team’s performance over the next two months could determine the approach the front office takes as far as personnel management goes.

The Thunder will return to action on Saturday night. Oklahoma City will face former franchise player Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets in a rubber match.
