The Atlanta Falcons were throttled 30-0 by the embattled Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. To go along with a number of issues across the entire roster, kicker Parker Romo missed both of his field goal attempts in the game.
Romo replaced former Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo after week one, and came out in the Falcons 22-6 win over the Vikings in week two and made all five of his attempts. He missed both field goal attempts against Carolina though, from 49 and 55 yards.
No one is kidding themselves; Romo’s two missed kicks were probably the least of the team’s concerns as they were shutout. For Romo however, he is still battling to keep this job that he just earned.
“Just reset,” Romo said after the loss. “Reset and take it one kick at a time, doesn’t matter if I make it or miss it.”
“I’ve said it multiple times, every day is an interview, so I’ve just got to go back this week and make corrections and make the kicks. You can go kick to kick really, it’s one rep at a time and that goes for everybody. I’ve just got to do what my job is and focus on myself and be better.”
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris talked about his kicker’s struggles after the game.
“Had two misses, got to go evaluate those things and figure out what we’ve got going on there,” Morris said. “Went out last week and went 5-for-5, this week came out and went 0-for-2. We can’t have those moments.”
Falcons Ink Romo To Two-Year Deal As Koo Is Cut
The Falcons signed Parker Romo to a two-year deal late last week at the same time they cut their longtime kicker Younghoe Koo after they were dissatisfied with his performance in week one. Koo was coming off of a career worst season in 2024 when he made just 73 percent of his field goal attempts while his career average before the season was well over 85 percent.
Koo had suited up in 89 games as a Falcon over seven seasons and was a Pro Bowler in 2020.
28-year-old Romo had only suited up in four games in his NFL career before this season, all coming in 2024 with the Minnesota Vikings. He converted on 11-of-12 attempts last season with Minnesota.
Romo had signed a deal with the New England Patriots in the offseason before they cut him and kept Andy Borregales to be their kicker.
Falcons Already In Precarious Spot After 1-2 Start
Things looked decent for Atlanta after they narrowly lost in week one to the now 3-0 Buccaneers and then defeated Minnesota in week two, but a 30-0 loss to Carolina, a potential bottom three team in the league has all Falcons fans on high alert.
With tough matchups coming up against the Commanders and Bills, there has been an outcry of support for Kirk Cousins to take over the role of starter in place of Michael Penix Jr. who has underperformed to start the season.
With Tampa Bay already off to a great start, the Falcons may have to refocus their mindset on battling for a Wild Card spot.
