The Baltimore Ravens hired Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to become their next head coach. According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Minter signed a five-year deal.

“Sources: the Baltimore Ravens are hiring Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as their head coach and signing him to a five-year contract. Minter visited the Ravens on Wednesday and now reunites with the team he coached for from 2017 to 2020.”

The 42-year-old replaces John Harbaugh, whom the team fired on January 6. Now, he takes the helm of a team that was one game from making the playoffs and winning the AFC North.

Before his two-year stint with Los Angeles, Minter served as the defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan. With experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, he takes over a team that looks to return to the playoffs and make what they believe is another run at another championship.

Minter is no stranger to Baltimore, as he worked for the Ravens, starting as a defensive assistant and ultimately serving as the team’s defensive backs coach. Team owner Steve Bisciotti, senior advisor Ozzie Newsome, and general manager Eric DeCosta led the process in order to fill the vacancy.

While Offensively Potent, Minter Could Overhaul the Defense

In 2025, the team boasted uneven numbers defensively. According to Pro Football Reference, the team ranked in the top 10 against the rush in attempts and yards. Meanwhile, the pass defense struggles, placing 30th in passing attempts and yards. The Ravens surrendered at least 250 yards nine times during the season, which is something for the new head coach to attend to.

Minter wants to play a heavy dose of nickel defense with a five-man line, bolstered by disruptive interior linemen that want to win one-on-one. Meanwhile, on the back end, zone coverage is something that he could look to implement, as he places his stamp on the team.

Some believed that the franchise would bring in an offensive mind to help Jackson evolve his game. However, in landing a head coach focused on defense, Minter will let his offensive coordinator shepherd the offense, while he tends to the other side of the ball.

Minter did win an nartional title as Michgan’s defensive coordinator. On the path to the title, he specialized in suffocating potent offenses, giving his opffense a chance to cobble together enough points to win the game.

In Los Angeles, safety Derwin James enjoyed where he affected games in the areas of pass rushing, run support and coverage. Hamilton presents a similar skill set that could end up with a similar impact on the defense. Other questions like how does the effect players like veteran corner Marlon Humphrey who loves the physical play of man coverage. How will Minter impact the secondary?

For just the time since 2000, the Baltimore Ravens have a new head coach.
