Ex-Bills Cornerback Turns Down Another Offer From Division Rival

Former Buffalo Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas is still holding out for a better deal before joining a division rival.

The veteran defensive back has gotten interest from the Miami Dolphins in free agency but reportedly turned down an offer from the team in June. Douglas is apparently still seeking a higher price, with a new report that he also rejected the latest offer from the Dolphins.

Rasul Douglas Not Moved by Dolphins Offer

NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported that the Dolphins have a standing offer to Douglas to join their secondary, but the 30-year-old is still holding out for a better deal. Anderson noted that other teams have shown interest in Douglas.

“I’m also told free agent cornerback Rasul Douglas didn’t move on an offer from the Miami Dolphins Thursday. Douglas continues to field interest from multiple teams, per league source,” Anderson wrote on X.

Insider Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported last month that the Dolphins were very interested in Douglas and tried to sign him before the start of training camp, but the former Bills cornerback wasn’t willing to take the first offer they sent him.

“The Dolphins have maintained contact with Bills free agent cornerback Rasul Douglas, who rejected a Miami offer in May,” Jackson reported. “He remains a possibility.”

Anderson stressed that the Dolphins sent a new offer last week, but it wasn’t attractive enough to Douglas — and it could be more than just money holding him back.

“Maybe the Dolphins will raise the offer & change his mind—but it may not all be about compensation,” Anderson reported.

The Dolphins are in need of some cornerback help after trading Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Douglas is one of the most accomplished defensive backs on the open market.  Douglas started 15 games for the Bills last season and was a fixture in the secondary since joining the team ahead of the trade deadline in 2023.

Bills Open to Bringing Rasul Douglas Back

The Bills had been open to the idea of re-signing Douglas to a new contract, with general manager Brandon Beane saying the team was leaving the door open on two veterans who hit free agency.

“Brandon Beane says the #Bills have not closed the door on bringing back CB Rasul Douglas or WR Amari Cooper,” reporter Alex Brasky shared in a post on X.

Douglas would have plenty of competition if he were to return to Buffalo, however. The Bills used a first-round pick on cornerback Maxwell Hairston and brought back two longtime veterans, Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson.

While he may no longer hold a starting job in Buffalo, Douglas could provide some veteran depth at a position that was a weak point last season. The Bills struggled when starter Christian Benford went down in the AFC Championship game, leading replacement Kaiir Elam to struggle against the explosive Kansas City Chiefs offense.

The Bills have since traded Elam to the Dallas Cowboys, making other investments into the secondary in the hopes of shoring up the position heading into 2025.
