Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs is making his first trip to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, but the appearance could be soured by some new legal trouble for the embattled star.
TMZ reported that the receiver is facing a new civil lawsuit for defamation, one filed just days before the Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. The lawsuit comes as Diggs faces potential criminal charges for another incident in December, which will bring him into court just days after the Super Bowl.
New Lawsuit Accuses Stefon Diggs of Defamation
As TMZ noted, the latest lawsuit stems from accusations related to a stolen car, an incident that took place nearly two years ago.
“In the docs, a man who claims he used to work for Stefon says in July 2024, Stefon requested he arrange for Stefon’s Ferrari to be transported from Miami to New York and then to Houston … but he says the Ferrari was stolen in Houston,” the report noted. “The guy claims law enforcement concluded the Ferrari was stolen by third parties in a sophisticated theft … but he says Stefon started telling people in their circles that the guy stole the car.”
The man filing the lawsuit denied stealing the car, and never faced criminal charges, TMZ added. He claims that “Stefon’s false allegations caused his concierge and consulting business to suffer.”
The man claims he faced further harassment as a result of the allegation.
Stefon Diggs Also Facing Criminal Charges
Diggs was also hit with criminal charges of felony strangulation or suffocation stemming from an incident on Dec. 2, when police say the Patriots receiver assaulted a former personal chef amid a payment dispute.
Diggs and his legal team requested a delay in his arraignment until Feb. 13, five days after the Super Bowl, and a judge granted the request.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted, the delay ensured that Diggs would not face punishment from the NFL this season.
“It was already unlikely that the NFL would place Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs on the Commissioner Exempt list (i.e., paid leave) before the Super Bowl. It’s now virtually certain it won’t happen,” Florio wrote.
Diggs has vehemently denied the allegations, saying in a statement through lawyer David Meier that he never assaulted anyone and that the accusations were false.
“They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur,” Meier said in a statement (per WBZ). “The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.”
