Chuba Hubbard scampered 15 yards to the end zone.
It was the first touchdown on Sunday Night Football in Week 4, and it gave the Carolina Panthers a 7-3 lead over the Detroit Lions.
In a home showcase game for the Panthers in primetime, it brought Hubbard into the spotlight.
It also raised some questions about Hubbard’s name and about where he’s from.
What is Chuba Hubbard’s Real Name?
Hubbard’s real name is indeed Chuba.
His full name is Chuba Robert-Shamar Hubbard.
Chuba is a Nigerian name from the Igbo culture. It means either “God of prosperity” or “God of abundance.”
Where is Chuba Hubbard From?
Hubbard was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
He’s the son of a Nigerian father and a Canadian mother.
He ended up attending Bev Facey Community High School, which is in Canada.
That means he played Canadian football, under those rules, in high school. He was a monster there, with 6,880 rushing yards on 458 attempts in three varsity seasons. He scored 82 touchdowns.
Chuba Hubbard College
Hubbard attended college at Oklahoma State University, which clearly wasn’t deterred by his status as a Canadian football player.
They saw talent, and Hubbard proved them right.
Hubbard grew into a unanimous All-American for the Cowboys.
He also led the NCAA with 2,094 yards in the 2019 season.
Hubbard eventually was drafted in the fourth round of the NFL Draft and the fifth round of the CFL Draft in 2021.
He would’ve been drafted higher to the CFL if they thought he’d actually sign, but Hubbard followed the NFL path that most expected for him.
Chuba Hubbard Contract
Hubbard signed a contract extension with the Panthers on Nov. 7, 2024.
It was a four-year deal worth $33.2 million. About half, $15 million, was guaranteed.
Hubbard has had competition for the Panthers’ RB spot since signing the deal. In 2025, it was Rico Dowdle. In 2026, it was Jonathon Brooks.
All throughout, though, Hubbard has been a reliable constant for the Panthers offense.
At this point, it’s no surprise that he scored a touchdown under the bright lights of Sunday Night Football. Hubbard has proven to the Panthers that they can count on him.
