Bears’ Zavion Thomas Pick Just Put a Fan Favorite on Thin Ice

The Chicago Bears selected LSU wide receiver Zavion Thomas on Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft… and all of the sudden Jahdae Walker‘s roster spot just got a lot more interesting.

Thomas ran a 4.28 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine, one of the fastest times ever recorded. For Walker, one of the biggest fan favorites in Chicago, that number matters.

The undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M spent all of 2025 fighting for a role he barely got: six catches, 87 yards, two touchdowns on just 10 targets. But Bears fans fell in love anyway. Game tying touchdown against the Packers in Week 16. A score against the Lions to close the regular season. Walker had a way of showing up when it mattered.

Then DJ Moore got traded. Olamide Zaccheaus signed with Atlanta. Devin Duvernay went to Arizona. Walker looked like the clear WR3 candidate for about five minutes before Kalif Raymond signed for $5.1 million. Now the Bears made things even more complicated by drafting Zavion Thomas.

What Thomas brings

Zavion Thomas is no ordinary depth piece. The 5’10” LSU product had 41 catches for 488 yards and four touchdowns in 2025, but his production undersells what he actually does.

He scored touchdowns four different ways in college… receiving, rushing, punt returns, kick returns. His career return highlights include a 94 yard kick return TD, a 95 yard kick return TD, and a 63 yard punt return score.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler projects Thomas as a return man and gadget player, someone who “can create explosive plays.” That combination of speed and special teams value gives the Chicago Bears exactly the kind of complement that a receiver like Jahdae Walker struggles to compete with on pure profile alone.

Thomas also brings legitimate juice as a route runner at the line. His 6.3 yards after contact per catch in 2025 shows his speed makes things happen with the ball.

Jahdae Walker’s reality check

The Chicago Bears’ WR depth chart heading into training camp looks like this: Rome Odunze and Luther Burden as the clear top two, with Kalif Raymond, Jahdae Walker, and now Zavion Thomas fighting for WR3 reps.

Walker’s ceiling as a receiver is unknown. He’s 6’3″ with touchdowns against division rivals in big moments. Ben Johnson went out of his way before the draft to praise him publicly. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has been in Walker’s corner since the preseason.

But the truth is that this is still Walker’s roster spot to lose in training camp, but the Bears have made it abundantly clear they’re not handing him anything. Thomas offers elite speed, return value, and the gadget versatility that Chicago’s offense under Ben Johnson can put to serious use alongside Caleb Williams.

One thing is clear: Jahdae Walker has every reason to be motivated heading into the summer. He’s also running out of room to prove himself without a significant showing in the preseason. For a guy who clawed his way onto this roster as an undrafted free agent, this is nothing new… He knows what he has to do.
