Dohnte Meyers, a compelling CFL addition with no guarantee of surviving the final cuts, has made some noise for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Less than two weeks before the roster deadline, his chances are on the rise.
Meyers strengthened his case again in Cincinnati’s 27-9 preseason win over the Chicago Bears, catching five passes and adding a 9-yard jet sweep while contributing in the return game.
Four of his receptions came on the opening drive against Chicago’s starting defense, per to Bengals.com’s Aug. 23 postgame report.
The more revealing development came afterward.
Josh Johnson said all of Cincinnati’s quarterbacks have confidence in Meyers and added that the receiver has shown “no limitations” to his game. Johnson specifically pointed to Joe Burrow and Joe Flacco as quarterbacks who have consistently trusted Meyers throughout the summer.
Meyers is no longer auditioning himself with one standout practice or one preseason flash. He’s stacking productive performances and building trust with every quarterback Cincinnati could put behind center.
Meyers Keeps Bolstering His Roster Argument

Meyers caught four passes for 32 yards on Cincinnati’s first possession against the Bears’ No. 1 defense.
One of the most important plays came on third-and-10 when Chicago sent an all-out blitz. Meyers adjusted his route from the slot, worked toward the sideline and gave Johnson an immediate answer for a 14-yard completion.
That type of play matters during final roster evaluations because it goes past athletic ability.
Bengals.com senior writer Geoff Hobson noted Sunday that Meyers appears to have a roster spot “his to lose.” That’s a notable rise from where the 26-year-old stood when Cincinnati signed him to a reserve/future contract in January after two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Meyers produced 1,056 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in the CFL last season before making the jump back to the NFL.
He has carried that momentum into August.
Bengals.com had already identified Meyers as the leader among the receivers competing for spots at the back of the room following Cincinnati’s preseason opener. Another productive night against Chicago has only strengthened that position.
Bengals QB Room Has Made Its Feelings Clear
The endorsement from Johnson is noteworthy because he didn’t present himself as the only quarterback who trusts Meyers.
Burrow praised Meyers earlier in camp after revealing that the receiver drove from Atlanta on short notice to throw with him. Flacco has also regularly targeted Meyers during practice, according to Bengals.com.
Now Johnson is doing the same, as Meyers has support from three veteran quarterbacks with very different roles in Cincinnati’s offense.
The Bengals already know the top of their receiver room will revolve around Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, while Andrei Iosivas brings several years of experience in the system. Rookie Colbie Young has also continued to impress and caught his first preseason touchdown against Chicago.
That leaves limited space for everyone else.
Meyers has responded by giving Cincinnati reasons to keep him beyond his receiving production. His ability to line up in different spots, handle pre-snap movement and contribute on both punt and kickoff returns increases his value when roster spots become scarce.
And although Meyers may have entered August as one of the players fighting to survive that deadline, he’s beginning to look like one of the harder players to leave off the 53-man roster.
