Not long ago, Cooper Rush was one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys. He made quite a few starts stepping in for Dak Prescott and turned a lot of heads.

There were some who questioned whether or not Rush could become a starting caliber quarterback for another team.

Rush spent his first seven seasons with the Cowboys. He played in 35 games during that run. Last season, he spent the year with the Baltimore Ravens.

Throughout his 39-game NFL career, Rush has completed 61.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,766 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He produced at a solid level when called upon, although he did have a rough 2025 season.

With that being said, the 32-year-old quarterback remains a free agent. Rush is looking to latch on with another team and is hoping for a chance to earn a spot during training camp and preseason action.

Former Cowboys QB Cooper Rush Linked to AFC Team

Following the NFL Draft, there are still a few teams who could use some quarterback help. Rush might be an option for those teams.

FanSided’s Charlie Baduini has suggested Rush as a potential option for the New York Jets.

“Another experienced option would be longtime Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush,” Baduini wrote. “The eight-year veteran has 42 appearances in his career and is 9-7 as a starter.”

He continued on, admitting that Rush wouldn’t be the most talented option but that he would bring a veteran presence that the Jets could use.

“Rush wouldn’t be the most talented option for the Jets to add behind Smith, but he would certainly bring a level of stability that they don’t currently have.”

The Jets Would Give Cooper Rush a Shot at Playing Time

Heading into the 2026 NFL season, New York is penciled in to start Geno Smith at quarterback. Smith is coming off of a poor season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rush signing with the Jets would give him a chance to play. If Smith struggles once again this year, New York could turn to Rush. That’s an opportunity worth exploring for the former Cowboys signal caller.

Dallas fans would love to see Rush get another opportunity. He was a fan favorite during his time with the Cowboys.

At this point in time, Rush heading to the Jets is just an idea. There has been no concrete reporting connecting the two parties. But, it’s a move that would make a lot of sense for New York and Rush alike.
