Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix wants to clear the air about his relationship with his head coach.
Nix, speaking Wednesday with reporters, said there’s no animosity between him and Sean Payton after the duo was seen having an animated conversation on the sidelines during Sunday’s game in Indianapolis.
“For whatever reason,” Nix said, “we’re allowing conversations to become bigger than what they are. We oftentimes forget that it’s a big stadium and a lot of people are talking at the same time, so you’ve got to be a little louder and more vocal.”
The Broncos lost 29-28 to the Colts on Spencer Shrader’s 45-yard field goal as time expired, evening their record at 1-1.
What Happened Between Bo Nix and Sean Payton?
The now-viral sideline exchange occurred late in the third quarter after Nix failed to connect with tight end Evan Engram on third-and-4 at the Colts’ 45-yard line.
Payton appeared to utter something to Nix as the quarterback walked off the field. As Nix continued toward the bench, Payton took a few steps in his direction and tried to get his attention. An animated conversation followed.
“That was just something as simple as he asked me what happened on a play,” explained Nix, who was 22 of 30 for 206 yards and three touchdowns to go with an interception. “I told him, I turned, he couldn’t quite hear, turned back and told him again. There were no issues. It’s just a quick conversation with the head coach. Nothing pressing.”
Payton also downplayed the exchange, though he described it differently.
“It wasn’t what it appeared,” he said. “It was an affirmation of, ‘This is what we’re wanting to do.’ I was looking at it and trying to think — I don’t recall — I think it was more about excitement. I saw it, and it was following, I think, a series where we ran it pretty well.
“I would know if there was ever one of those moments. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t think it was what it appeared. In fact, I know it wasn’t.”
Nix, the No. 12 pick in the 2024 draft, and Payton had a dust-up during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders last October. Both sides later laughed off the incident, with Payton comparing Nix to the movie character Ferris Bueller.
“There is still a little bit of Ferris Bueller in him we are trying to get rid of,” Payton joked. “I love him to death. And sometimes (what you saw) is my love language.”
What Are Fans Saying About the Incident?
The latest interaction grabbed plenty of attention on social media, with posters sharing differing opinions on who was blame.
“Imagine Tom Brady doing this to Bill Belichick in his 2nd year in the League,” one poster wrote.
Another commented, “Bo is a winner. Sean needs to listen.”
Others chalked it up to them being in the heat of the moment.
“Just a little pit of passion,” one more said.
