The Denver Broncos are four days away from their final 2026 preseason game. After losing to the Green Bay Packers 33-13, several players from their star-studded and talent defense, took quite the beating.
While lopsided games are not uncommon during the preseason, it’s unprecedented for the Broncos organization to be giving up. Four-year cornerback Riley Moss, left with a rib injury on the second play of the game.
An injury this close to the start of the season is slightly nerve-wracking, head coach Sean Payton provided a positive update on Moss after practice on Monday, August 24.

Sean Payton Says Riley Moss’ Rib Injury Is ‘Nothing Serious’
The Denver Broncos unofficial 2026 RCB1 Riley Moss, left the first quarter against the Green Bay Packers on Friday, August 21 with an apparent rib injury. Moss was listed as DNP at practice on Monday.
He was at practice on the side field.
“Riley Moss did NOT practice today,” per Broncos beat writer Zac Stevens. “He was at practice on the side field.”
Head coach Sean Payton, provided an update on the 26-year-old CB seeking a big contract, saying, “it’s nothing serious.”
“He’s doing fine. I would say this: it’s nothing serious. We’re being smart. We’ll see as the week progresses where he’s at.”

Whether or not Moss will participate in the Broncos final preseason game on Friday against the Minnesota Vikings is TBD.
“Sean Payton said Wednesday the Broncos will decide who will play on Friday and how they approach this final preseason game,” per Stevens.
In 2025, Moss tallied 80 total tackles, 19 passes defended, one sack, and one interception. He is entering the final year of his $5.45 million rookie contract.

Since Moss is approaching the end of his contract, he is playing for a contract extension with the Broncos. However, if it is not offered to him, Moss will be a free agent after the season concludes in March 2027.
Moss is projected to receive about a $20 million contract whether that be a contract extension or signing with a new team in free agency.
The Broncos have five players eligible for contract extensions from their 2023 draft class. Marvin Mims Jr., Drew Sanders, Riley Moss, JL Skinner, and Alex Forsyth.

In July, there was discourse among fans about Ja’Quan McMillian and Riley Moss battling for a contract extension from the Broncos.
However, Moss was believed to shut down that rumor after posting a photo with McMillian working out together in Florida during the offseason.
If Moss’ injury does not keep him sidelined for too long, he will remain an important asset for the Broncos secondary increasing his chances of receiving that much anticipated extension.
