The Detroit Lions walked away from their first divisional clash against the Green Bay Packers in a close yet crucial win. While the victory made noise, taking their season record to 4-2, safety Brian Branch’s return to the gridiron was just as significant for the defense, especially considering the pressure they had absorbed in the initial games.

Lions’ Pro Bowl safety Aidan Hutchinson was clearly thrilled to have Branch back in the secondary, and he could not hide his excitement while speaking to the reporters after the game last night.

“Dude, he’s our tone setter,” Hutchinson said, praising Branch. “He’s the guy that will come down and make a big hit. That’s his X-factor right there: he can change a game by making a hit, forcing a fumble, making a big splash play like that.“

With questions surrounding defense’s dismal performance from the first week, they finally showed significant improvement last night, as they gave up fewer points than in any previous game this season. Branch has certainly played a role in that improved display last night.

Branch Made Immediate Impact in Lions Return

The divisional game between the Lions and Packers was a close-knit contest because the scoreboard was 17-17 in the final minute of the fourth quarter until Jake Bates’ field goal made the difference in points in the last second.

In his return game from injury, Brian Branch took 67% of snaps, which was lower than his normal, but it was a cautious approach for an injury returnee. He had the second-most snaps among the safeties after Chuck Clark (82%).

The 25-year-old played a role in restricting the Green Bay Packers to only 17 points, as he registered 4 total tackles and 1 PD. His fourth-quarter interception of Packers QB Jordan Love was the loudest and most important moment of his comeback.

The play happened early in the fourth quarter. After a costly intentional grounding penalty, Jordan Love searched for a potential game-changing play downfield. When he threw a deep pass to the wide receiver Christian Watson, Branch read the route perfectly from the secondary. Despite being away from the gridiron for about ten months, he showed the same explosive athleticism, making a high jump, causing an interception, and ending the Packers’ drive in disappointment.

Hutchinson’s ‘big splash play‘ description referred to the deep interception of Branch last night, showing his capability to change the course of the game. While Hutchinson had nothing but praise for Branch, the Pro Bowl edge rusher quietly put together a strong performance yesterday.

Aidan Hutchinson Disrupted The Packers’ Offense With Relentless Pressure

Aidan Hutchinson once again showed his usual dominance against Jordan Love, anchoring the Lions defense from the front. He consistently created problems for Love and the Packers offensive line through all four quarters.

The two-time Pro-Bowler spent a majority of the game surrounding Jordan Love and creating constant pressure, which was evident in his numbers. The edge rusher logged an impressive 5 QB hits, while he also recorded a sack, taking his total sack tally to 5 this season. In addition, he had 2 total tackles. With Hutchinson bringing pressure up front and Branch setting the tone in the secondary, the Lions have every reason to be optimistic moving forward.
