The Detroit Lions are preparing for their season-opener in Week 1, and they have quite a tough matchup right out of the gate, as they will be taking on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Even though the game is just a couple of days away, the Lions are still tinkering with their roster and making moves to shore up some of their perceived weaknesses.

One of those weak spots is quarterback, where only Jared Goff and Kyle Allen are on the 53-man roster. On Thursday, the front office decided to sign veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard to their practice squad, but in order to make room for him, the team was forced to release Isaac Ukwu, a young defensive lineman who very nearly made the team out of training camp.

Ukwu didn’t get selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he ended up latching on with the Lions, spending the majority of the season on their practice squad. Ukwu took the field in two games, racking up three tackles, but it’s clear the team was hoping that he would develop behind the scenes so that he could potentially become a contributor down the line.

During Detroit’s training camp and preseason action, Ukwu emerged as a standout player on the defensive line, and he made a serious push for a roster spot. He ended up being one of the team’s final cuts as part of their roster trimming, but he quickly returned to the team’s practice squad after going unclaimed on waivers.

Having only two quarterbacks at their disposal was always going to be untenable for the Lions, especially when considering how important the position is in the game of football. That led to Beathard getting signed on Thursday, but it meant the end of the line for Ukwu, as he got released in order to free up a roster spot for Beathard.

Losing Ukwu is obviously not ideal for the Lions, but that’s what happens when you have as many talented players as they do. Ukwu’s familiarity with the team could make him a candidate to return at some point down the line if a spot on the practice squad opens up, but he very well could get scooped up by another team in the near future.

For now, Detroit’s full attention will on its battle with Green Bay, as the team will need to be at its best if they want to start the season off on the right foot. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET, and with the Lions wanting to deliver a message this year after coming up short in the playoffs again last year, they could do just that by handing the upstart Packers a loss in front of their fans at Lambeau Field.
