The Detroit Lions faced a frightening scene Sunday when linebacker Jack Campbell went down against the Minnesota Vikings and required medical attention on the field after suffering a neck injury.
The Lions announced that Campbell was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for his neck.
Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman reported that a cart came out for Campbell and medical personnel were preparing him for a stretcher. Fellow Detroit linebacker Jimmy Rolder was also receiving treatment, according to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News.
The initial reports did not establish the nature of Campbell’s injury. They described an extended medical response at Ford Field, with players from both teams taking a knee as personnel attended to him.
Campbell was loaded onto a medical cart and carted off the field with 14:48 left in the 4th quarter.
What Happened to Jack Campbell Against the Vikings?
Campbell and Rolder both tackled Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson after a 10-yard catch and run, and Campbell’s body appeared to bend in a dangerous way.
Twentyman described Campbell as down on the field with numerous medical personnel around him. He reported that staff were immobilizing Campbell as they prepared him for a stretcher.
While details were few after the initial injury, Lions players were distraught. Defensive star Aidan Hutchison “looks like he’s in tears,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Campbell and Rolder Injuries Raise Questions for Lions’ Linebackers
Campbell occupies a central role in Detroit’s defense. The Lions identified him as their every-down middle linebacker in their offseason position preview, coming off a 2025 season in which he recorded 176 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five sacks.
His responsibilities make any absence significant. Detroit would have to replace the player stationed in the middle of its defense while determining which linebacker combinations it can use for the remainder of the game.
Rolder requiring treatment adds another complication. Rather than dealing with an injury to one linebacker, the Lions were assessing two players from the same position group during the stoppage.
Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Trevor Nowaske and Amen Ogbongbemiga are among Detroit’s other linebacker options. Their workloads and assignments would depend on the availability of Campbell and Rolder, along with the defensive packages Detroit chooses against Minnesota.
The Lions entered Sunday with no injury-related surprises on their inactive list. Twentyman reported before kickoff that all five inactive players were healthy scratches, while cornerback Roger McCreary was available after being listed as questionable with a foot injury.
That changed with the scene involving Campbell and Rolder. Detroit’s immediate concern is their condition, with an official medical update still needed to clarify what comes next.
