Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is set to enter his sixth NFL season in the Motor City since the club acquired him in January 2021 in the blockbuster Matthew Stafford deal with the Los Angeles Rams.

Since arriving in Detroit, Goff has helped the franchise reach heights that literal generations of fans had never before seen in their lives, including an appearance in the NFC Championship game along with a second straight year of winning the NFC North Division with a pristine 15-2 record.

Not only that, but Goff is under contract for several more seasons, meaning that for the foreseeable future, Detroit is locked in at the quarterback position. But how much longer does he have, and what are the chances that Detroit could look to make a change if he were to falter in the upcoming season?

NFL Insider Dan Graziano Looks Ahead To Jared Goff’s Future With The Detroit Lions

ESPN NFL Insider Mike Graziano recently put together a tiered list of what the future could hold for multiple quarterbacks, Goff being among them.

He began by noting the heights that the Lions have reached with Goff under center, and issued the first part of his prediction in which they keep Goff around.

The Lions, with a stacked roster and a soft-looking schedule, bounce back to the top of the division and make a playoff run behind Goff and their elite offense,” he wrote. “Next offseason, they elect to keep Goff on his current contract and push off a possible extension to the 2028 offseason. Maybe they look to the draft for a developmental prospect, but at age 32 and still playing well, Goff remains their best and preferred option.”

However, he also looked ahead to the possibility of a regression in Goff’s performance, and wondered if Lions management could consider laying the groundwork for a split if that were to take place.

“The defensive injuries are too much to overcome, and Goff and the offense hit a snag,” he wrote as part of his Long Shot scenario. “The Lions fail to take advantage of that soft schedule and miss the playoffs for the second year in a row. Frustrated by their inability to cash in on what seemed like a Super Bowl window, the Lions decide to break things up. They move on from Goff and bring in a veteran whose situation elsewhere fell apart, such as Baker Mayfield or Jalen Hurts.”

Jared Goff Is Looking Forward To Big Things For The Lions In 2026

Under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who was hired to replace the fired John Morton, Goff is looking forward to bigger and better things in the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, head coach Dan Campbell singled out the leadership skills of Goff last month.

“It’s the mentality, the urgency, the leadership, the, ‘Hey man, let’s go.’ We cannot accept anything less than the best. He wants to be the best in the league, and he wants to run the best offense in the league,” Campbell said of Goff. “And to get there, we’ve got to go, we don’t have time. That’s where I really feel him growing. And every year I felt more of an urgency out of him in that regard, more command, more leadership and that has to come organically. It can’t be forced on somebody, it can’t. And so that’s great to see out of him.”
