The Lions have signed a former Matthew Stafford teammate.

Not only have the Detroit Lions signed safety Christian Izien in free agency, but general manager Brad Holmes has now added some much-needed help to the club’s secondary.

Multiple reports indicate that the Lions have signed cornerback Roger McCreary, who most recently played with former Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams.

“Free agent corner Roger McCreary has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions on a one-year deal, per source,” wrote ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on X. “McCreary started 38 games for Tennessee before traded to the Rams last season.”

So far, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Detroit Lions Have Signed Roger McCreary To A One-Year Contract

The likes of D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch have all returned for next season for the Lions, who did lose Amik Robertson to free agency.

McCreary was originally selected by the Tennessee Titans in the second round (35th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Auburn, where he earned  first-team All-American honors by both the Associated Press and ESPN following his senior season. He had originally committed to South Alabama, but backed out.

Before his collegiate career, McCreary played high school football at Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama. He worked his way up to becoming a three-star prospect, and was eventually ranked the 87th overall high school cornerback.

He racked up an impressive total of 84 total tackles, one interception, and eight passes defensed while starting all 17 games for the Titans in his rookie campaign.

The following season, he appeared in 15 games (11 starts) and amassed 86 tackles, two sacks, six passes defensed, one interception, and a forced fumble. In 2024, he once again played in 15 games, but saw his total tackle number drop to 50.

This past October, he was dealt to the Rams along with a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick for a conditional fifth-round pick.

In the Rams’ Week 12 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McCreary suffered a hip injury and was placed on Injured Reserve, where he would remain until being activated for their final regular season game in Week 17.

So far in his NFL career, he’s racked up 257 tackles, 17 pass deflections, four sacks, and three interceptions.

Roger McCreary Is One Of The Newest Faces For The Lions Going Into Next Season

The Rams, who acquired McCreary from the Titans last season, also received a 2026 conditional 6th-round pick while sending a 2026 conditional 5th-round pick back to Tennessee.

While with the Rams, he amassed a total of four tackles in six games. Prior to the trade to Los Angeles, he racked up three pass deflections and an interception in eight games.

This represents a solid depth signing for Lions general manager Brad Holmes, and because it’s a short commitment, McCreary will be motivated to put forward a strong performance in order to earn another contract.

McCreary will be out to prove that he belongs in the NFL, and it will not only aid the Lions, who aim to return to the postseason after missing in 2025, but will also benefit him as well.
