The Detroit Lions are preparing to face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 11, but an unexpected development involving wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. has created a fascinating question.

Could the Lions be the mystery team acquiring him?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the Cardinals are finalizing a trade involving Harrison, the former No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Harrison will not play against Detroit on Sunday, with Arizona reportedly comfortable moving forward with an offer it has received.

Curiously, the identity of his next team remains undisclosed.

That creates an intriguing possibility: What if Arizona is waiting until after Sunday’s game to announce the deal because the Lions are involved?

There is no reporting indicating Detroit has made an offer or held discussions with the Cardinals. Still, the timing and Detroit’s wide receiver depth make the possibility worth examining.

Could Lions’ Matchup With Cardinals Explain Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Mystery?

The Cardinals are scheduled to host the Lions at State Farm Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Arizona is reportedly planning to hold Harrison out of that contest, and the receiver already knows he is on the verge of being dealt.

Yet the trade partner has not been identified.

One possible explanation, strictly speculative, is that the acquiring team is Detroit.

Announcing a deal involving a player headed to Sunday’s opponent would create an unusual situation before kickoff, particularly if the agreement has been reached but not formally completed.

Of course, that doesn’t establish any connection between the teams. There are plenty of ordinary explanations for the uncertainty, including outstanding negotiations, trade paperwork and the timing of the reports.

The Texans have also been identified as a team that has discussed acquiring Harrison, according to Schefter and Rapoport.

But the possibility of Detroit entering the picture becomes more interesting when considering the Lions’ receiving corps.

Lions’ Thin Wide Receiver Depth Makes Harrison an Interesting Fit

Detroit isn’t lacking established talent at the top of its wide receiver depth chart.

Amon-Ra St. Brown remains one of the NFL’s premier pass catchers, with Jameson Williams providing a vertical threat and Isaac TeSlaa occupying another starting role.

Behind that trio, however, the options are considerably less proven.

Detroit’s official depth chart lists Tom Kennedy and Tay Martin among its reserve receivers. Rookie Kendrick Law is on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL during the offseason, while veteran Cedrick Wilson Jr. is also on IR.

The Lions also lost Kalif Raymond during free agency.

That leaves Detroit with a strong starting group but relatively little experienced depth if another injury strikes.

Harrison would change the equation considerably.

The 24-year-old has struggled to fulfill his enormous expectations in Arizona, recording just five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown through four games this season.

But he produced 885 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie in 2024, and his combination of size, age and draft pedigree would make him an intriguing addition to Detroit’s offense.

Rather than depending entirely on his immediate production, the Lions could view Harrison as a longer-term investment alongside their established offensive stars.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Price Could Complicate Lions’ Pursuit

There is one considerable obstacle to the theory: Arizona’s asking price.

According to Schefter, the Cardinals initially sought first-round value for Harrison before becoming comfortable with the offers already on the table.

Detroit would need to determine whether surrendering valuable draft capital for another receiver makes sense, particularly with St. Brown, Williams and TeSlaa already under contract.

General manager Brad Holmes also has other roster needs to consider following Detroit’s 2-2 start.

Meanwhile, Houston represents a credible alternative.

The Texans have reportedly discussed a Harrison trade with Arizona, and the receiver previously played alongside quarterback C.J. Stroud at Ohio State.

That established connection gives Houston a compelling reason to pursue him.

For Detroit, the argument is less about an obvious starting vacancy and more about acquiring a talented young player before another team capitalizes on his declining value.

There is also the matter of Sunday’s game.

If the Lions are involved, the trade could become one of the NFL’s more unusual transactions: a player held out against the team he is about to join.

For now, that’s a theory rather than a reported development.

But until Harrison’s destination is revealed, the coincidence of the Cardinals facing a potential receiving-needy trade partner is difficult to overlook.
