Former Detroit Lions star Ndamukong Suh has some advice for anyone celebrating a major personal milestone: Keep it to yourself.
The five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle shared an Instagram carousel on Friday, October 23, encouraging his followers to keep their accomplishments private, whether it’s buying a home, paying off student loans or reaching a major financial goal.
The message drew plenty of support, but not everyone agreed with the former Lions star’s approach to celebrating success.
Suh’s post featured a series of illustrations showing the former NFL defensive tackle reaching different milestones, each paired with the same blunt instruction.
“Keep your mouth shut.”
The accomplishments included buying a first home, paying off student loans, earning a promotion, closing an investment deal and reaching $100,000 in savings.
The final slide offered a broader message: “Not all of your successes need to be advertised.”
In the accompanying caption, Suh explained his thinking.
“You can be proud of your progress without making it public,” he wrote.
“Buying your first home, paying off debt, or reaching a savings goal can mean years of work that nobody else sees. You don’t owe anyone an announcement.”
Suh ended the post by asking his followers which personal milestone meant more to them than the people around them realized.
Ndamukong Suh’s Message Draws Mixed Reactions
The responses revealed a disagreement over whether keeping accomplishments private is always the best approach.
One follower, @legacybuilders22, directly challenged Suh’s position.
“Imma disagree. Celebrate your major milestones. Move in silence on your way to achieving them,” the commenter wrote.
The follower compared keeping accomplishments private to asking athletes not to celebrate reaching the Pro Bowl, earning All-Pro honors or winning a championship.
Others endorsed Suh’s perspective.
“Love this 100%,” wrote @kunalic. “There’s zero gain in broadcasting what you’re chasing or what you’ve achieved.”
Another commenter, @jwilmmusic, agreed that keeping achievements private can sometimes be the wiser choice.
A separate follower, @jaybets999, offered a personal example, explaining that getting overly excited about a potential collaboration had cost them an opportunity.
“I still have a long way to go,” the commenter acknowledged.
The discussion highlighted two different interpretations of Suh’s advice: One emphasizes protecting personal accomplishments from outside attention, while the other argues there’s nothing wrong with celebrating the work required to achieve them.
It’s also a distinction Suh’s original message leaves open. Encouraging people to keep their goals private isn’t necessarily the same as telling them they should never celebrate reaching those goals.
Former Lions Star Ndamukong Suh Has Entered a New Chapter
Suh’s latest message comes more than a year after he officially announced his retirement from the NFL in July 2025, ending a career that began when Detroit selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
He quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier defensive tackles, collecting 10 sacks as a rookie and winning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Suh spent five seasons with the Lions, recording 36 sacks and earning four Pro Bowl selections during his time in Detroit.
He later played for the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles, winning Super Bowl LV with Tampa Bay.
His final NFL appearance came during the 2022 season with Philadelphia. He finished his career with 71.5 sacks and five Pro Bowl selections.
Although Suh has turned his attention toward life after football, he hasn’t completely stopped discussing the possibility of returning to the field.
In September, Suh publicly entertained a comeback after Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen floated the idea of bringing him to Buffalo. Suh responded with a video expressing interest in the opportunity.
His latest Instagram post, however, has nothing to do with football.
Instead, Suh is offering advice about what people should do when they win away from the field.
And as one follower pointed out, there’s a meaningful difference between keeping your next move quiet and celebrating after you’ve already accomplished it.
