The Green Bay Packers bottom of their wide receiver depth chart has yet to be sorted out. How many players the team keeps and who are still questions. However, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic believes Bo Melton is as close to a lock as a player can get with one week until roster cutdowns.

Schneidman said that special teams coordinator Cam Achord tried to avoid naming names when discussing the best names as the punt team gunner this summer. However, while Achord said they tried as many as 18 names in that spot, he could not help but name Melton as a standout.

Schneidman also added that passing game coordinator Jason Vrabel had similar praise for the fifth-year player.

“Passing game coordinator Jason Vrabel said Bo Melton was one of the best blocking WRs they’ve had come through this building.”

That is high praise and speaks to his ability to do the little things that will keep him on the roster. As Schneidman noted, when looking at the depth roster spots, it is going to come down to the little things that complete a roster, not highlight plays and potential.

“Those final spots come down to special teams intangibles,” added Schneidman. “So those two tea leaves, I’m reading into and saying Bo Melton is a darn near lock to make this team.”

Melton was already inside most projections, but it is hard to think of him as a bubble player anymore.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Battle is Finalizing

Bo Melton

GettyBo Melton will play just receiver for the Green Bay Packers in 2026.

The Packers top four receivers are locked in. They will start Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson. Then, Savion Williams will be a fourth receiver who is used in a gadget capacity.

The fifth and sixth spots are up in the air, and General Manager Brian Gutekunst noted that the team might even keep seven receivers due to how deep the room is.

Skyy Moore was given near-lock status earlier in the summer due to his special teams upside. So, the last spot or two likely comes down to Melton, Isaiah Neyor, and rookie UDFA J. Michael Sturdivant.

Neyor makes flashy catches, and Sturdivant is the new and exciting player. However, Melton is the one most likely to be the sixth receiver.

Packers Coaches Are High on Melton

Melton was a seventh-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Packers signed him off their practice squad in his rookie season, and they have not looked back. He was only active for five games in 2023, but caught 16 passes for 218 yards.

In the next two years, he became a 17-game player and was an active participant on special teams. The team tried him at cornerback last season, but this year he is back on the offensive side of the ball.

He only has 12 catches in the past two years. Considering the position switch and the addition of Moore and Sturdivant, there were questions about his fit on the depth chart. As of now, a big surprise would have to occur for Melton to miss making the roster.
